CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #031002 - Monday, October 6, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret listings for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. The MID-WEEK issue, usually sent on Thursdays, will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen, plus shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

Its a brisk fall day here in NYC - not a perfect day to be indoors writing a newsletter, so I shall do my best to mention all the items I can is as little time as possible, so I can get outside and breath in the fresh air and get some much needed sunshine.

I have had a really busy few days since I sent out the last issue on Thursday. I saw the amazing Gotham Girls at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) on Thursday night, then did four-in-a-row at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) - Toby Blackwell at 7:00 and the DC Anderson revue at 9:00 on Friday, then the wildly funny Rock Albers on Saturday at 5:00 and the lovely Jeanne MacDonald at 7:00 on Saturday. On Sunday I was back at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/) for two shows - Lynn Robinson at 2:00 and Laura Pearson at 4:00 pm, and a quick dash across the street to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) for Connie Pachl and Bill Daugherty at 5:30 pm. Original plan was to catch Danny Creed's show at MAMA'S at 8:30 pm, but my energy ran out (as well as my ability to handle any more 2-drink minimums) so I headed for home.

No cabaret tonight (I need a night off) but then on Tuesday its the amazing Ida Zecco - one of Boston's Best at 7:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/), then a quick cab ride uptown to try to get to Marian Heller's last show of her current run at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) at 8:30 pm. Wednesday, its time to catch Goldie Dver's new show at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) at 7:00 pm, then Sharon McNight at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/) at 9:30 pm. That brings us to Thursday at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) at 6:00 pm for Lucille Carr-Kaffashan's show. Whew - just thinking about it all gets me exhausted!

FORGOT AGAIN?

Several folks have written that they would be sending in their 2003-2004 membership donation soon, so this is just a reminder. I have been counting on your help in making CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE possible. Hopefully you can keep your promise this week.

CABARET ITEMS OF NOTE

AND ANOTHER NEW PIANO!

At THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) this time - and I heard it played for the very first time at Toby Blackwell's hilarious show on Friday night (review coming in the Mid-Week issue). Rick Panson, who co-owns the place, was around to hear it played in the show, and we chatted briefly afterwards about how proud he is of the cabaret offerings that booking manager Phil Bond has attracted to this rejuvenated venue. It is great to see how management gets behind a cabaret booking manager, and I see it time and again at most of the clubs I visit. Any other new cabaret-room/piano-bar pianos out there? Let me know.

REMINDER: HENLINE MEMORIAL OCTOBER 17th

The Memorial Service for Darrell Henline, founder of CABARET SCENES magazine, will be held on Friday, October 17th at 6:30 pm at ST. THOMAS CHURCH (Fifth Avenue at 53rd Street, NYC - http://www.saintthomaschurch.org/). Mr. Henline passed away on Thursday, September 25th, after a long bout with cancer.

CORRECTION: FIVE BANNERS FOR FIVE SHOWS IN A ROW AT THE DUPLEX!

I didn't read far enough on the schedule when I said in last week's issue that four shows in a row at the same club are running banners on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Website at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/). It is really five shows - on Friday nights at 9:00 pm "NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH: the lyrics of D.C. Anderson," with Lennie Watts, Julie Reyburn and Rob Sutton, joined by Musical Director Stephen Randoy and bassist Ritt Henn is running an ad. Then, on Saturdays at 5:00 pm, award-winning comic/singer Rock Albers' brand new show, "Rock 2: The New Rock Albers Show" has a banner. At 7:00 pm on Saturdays there's Jeanne MacDonald and musical director/arranger Rick Jensen, also running an ad all month. The Saturday show at 9:00 pm, with Baby Jane Dexter in her unprecedented eighth consecutive (and final) month of ANOTHER SPRING (THEN & NOW) is also a CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE advertiser. Finally, on Sundays at 5:00 pm, Kelly Briggs and Jerry Christakos present their newest version of LOVELY - and they are running an ad as well. Thanks to all for their continued support of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter and the website!

ALL-STAR LINEUP AT LSLF BENEFIT CONCERT

Liza Minnelli is only part of the amazing lineup of volunteer stars from musical theater and the concert stage, television, comedy and jazz appearing in the "Reach for Tomorrow" gala benefit concert for the LAURI STRAUSS LEUKEMIA FOUNDATION (http://www.lslf.org/) at CARNEGIE HALL (154 West 57th Street, NYC - CarnegieCharge 1-212-247-7800) to be held on November 3rd. I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available.

OCTOBER BANNER SLOTS SOLD OUT - NOVEMBER SLOTS SELLING FAST

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are just about sold out for October - I have one slot open each week except for the week of October 19th - the week of the Cabaret Convention here in NYC. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as far in advance as possible. A lot of folks want to start advertising their CDs for holiday sales in November, so don't delay getting your order in.

Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERSHIP LIST PASSES 300 MARK!

Over 300 of our nearly 2,500 subscribers to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE have joined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this year. Have you joined yet? I have tried to make the membership as inexpensive as possible, with more benefits than ever - including discounts on selected cabaret shows. If you find these messages and the information and news on the website of value, then I hope you will consider becoming a member today. I depend on your membership donations and the banner ads to make this service possible. You can join for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL), or get special discounts and additional benefits with a $75 (GOLD) donation (20% discount on banners, etc.), or become a sponsoring member at higher levels.

For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml - if you make your donation by check, please make the check payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.

COMING NEXT ISSUE

We will be sending out the MID-WEEK issue in a few days which will include reports/reviews on shows seen, as well as more news items, more cabaret listings and a rundown of new BREAKING NEWS items added to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) since the last mid-week issue. That issue will also include a listing of all shows offering a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

GET YOUR MEMBERSHIP CARD YET?

Unless you joined since the first of October, if you sent in a membership donation, you should have received your CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Membership Card by now. Please let me know at once if you have NOT received it. Meantime, about 50 CDs have also been sent to GOLD and above members - with another 50 going out this week for sure. And, I found, in entering the names of this year's members, about 9 GOLD members of last year who were never entered into the database - which means that they did not received their free CD last year (unless I addressed them by hand, but I don't recall doing that). If you joined as a GOLD member last year and never received your free CD, please send me your name and correct street address (I found a lot of errors in the addresses as well) and I'll send off one immediately - I will have about 20 CDs left after I send all the CDs to this year's eligible members so it is not a problem.

TIME TO CLOSE & SEND

That's about all for today - and I'm finished an hour earlier than planned! I am taking the night off from cabaret shows, but that doesn't mean I won't be busy working. There are about a dozen BREAKING NEWS items waiting to be posted as soon as I can scan a few more photos. And finally I think I will have time to re-post all the reviews I have written over the past few months so that you will have an easier time referring to them. Once that is complete, I can add a link from any news item that appears in the future regarding the shows I have reviewed for you to check out. It's a huge project that I plan to do over the next week or so.

Thanks once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these past weeks. We are now listing over 300 members, three-quarters the way towards out goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Of course it would be great if we could reach an even higher number, but we have many more months to go before the next membership year.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
