CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031003 - Thursday, October 9, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of
Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the
"MID-WEEK" CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY issue includes the regular
listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information on
all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.
This "MID-WEEK" issue covers other news, late breaking stories and
notes on shows seen plus listings of shows offering discounts to CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE members.
There is
so much news and information to try to get into this issue, I hardly
know where to start! I have seen 12 cabaret shows since the last Mid-Week
issue and I don't know if I can fit 12 reviews here - or even have
time to finish all 12 before my self-imposed deadline of 3:30 pm.
It is a deadline that I must keep today, because I simply must get
into town to see Lucille Carr-Kaffashan's show at 6:00 pm at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
- a promise is a promise.
Next, there
are 23 - yes, 23! - shows currently playing here in NYC offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! If a SILVER ($20) just attends
4 of these offerings, they would have the cost of their membership
back - and would still be able to use that $20 towards a banner ad
in the membership year! If you saw all 23 shows, you would be ahead
of the game by nearly $100!
But now I
am looking for folks to offer these discounts outside of the NYC area.
Remember, an empty seat brings you no income at all - a seat filled
with a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at a discount brings you extra
income, plus a walking-talking advertisement for you and your show.
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members are all cabaret lovers and are all
"internet savvy" - if they like your show, they are going to spread
the word, almost immediately.
And here's
another benefit to offering the discount - a free listing in the MIDWEEK
issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! For the many folks who ask to be
listed here, this is a way to be sure your show gets mentioned! And
a brief item on your show will be placed on the MEMBERS ONLY page
- with a photo if you send one. If you send me a press release for
the BREAKING NEWS page, your article link will also be "flagged" with
the discount notation.
Did I mention
that this is all free? (Except for the discount you give one of our
members on an otherwise empty seat.) Did I mention that you don't
have to even be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to offer the discount?
(But I certainly would appreciate your membership donation, and your
membership will make it possible to get discounts to other folks'
shows.)
And the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE roster continues to grow - with members all over the
USA as well as the UK and Australia. We're close to 325 - headed for
our 400 Member goal. And if you can't afford the $20 SILVER membership
cost, drop me a line - a number of folks have donated extra funds
above the membership donation amount to help out folks just like you!
I have 5 memberships to give away at the current time. Your "free"
SILVER membership will allow you to deduct $20 from your first banner
ad in a membership year, allow you to have your CD listed in the CD
SALE section, get discounts on cabaret shows and other events where
offered, and get a listing on the appropriate SILVER MEMBER page.
It has to
be first-come, first-served, so let me know right away if you feel
you need to take advantage of this offer. All will be in confidence
- the persons making the donations do not even wish to know your name.
And if, later this membership year, you can afford the membership,
you can make the donation to make it possible for us to offer someone
else a free membership.
For information
on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check
at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via
PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
- if you make your donation by check, please make the check payable
simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York,
NY 10036.
COPY & PASTE vs. CUT &
PASTE
A big apology
to Broadway veteran Pamela Jane ("PJ") Nelson, who has just one more
show at The ST. CLEMENT'S CABARET ROOM (423 West 46th Street, NYC
- Reservations: 212-246-7277 ext. 29 or stclementscabaret@yahoo.com)
this Sunday, October 12th at 6:00 pm. When I moved all the shows offering
a CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount to the Mid-Week Issue from the Monday
issue, I apparently "cut & pasted" rather than "copied & pasted" and
her plug was omitted in the Monday issue where I list shows that have
banners running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
You can help me make this all up to her by attending her show on Sunday
- if you can. She is someone who enjoys music, enjoys singing, enjoys
performing and wants to share her joy with an audience. You come away
from the show knowing you have just met a great talent, and have just
been totally and unequivocally entertained. I just loved this show
- and have come to love this lady. Ticket price is $10 (half price
for MAC and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members) and payable in cash at
the box office on the evening of the event. There is no minimum but
wine, beer, sodas and bottled water are available at the concession
stand.

I'M LOOKING FOR EVEN MORE
NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
etc. Add a website link if available.

How do you
get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send
me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your
flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out
a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often
have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim
quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using
the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when
putting together the four or more paragraphs.

OCTOBER BANNER SLOTS SOLD
OUT - NOVEMBER SLOTS SELLING FAST
BANNER AD
spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are just about sold out
for October - I have one slot open each week except for the week of
October 19th - the week of the Cabaret Convention here in NYC. Keep
in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to
order a banner, reserve your banner space as far in advance as possible.
A lot of folks want to start advertising their CDs for holiday sales
in November, so don't delay getting your order in.
Banner ads
are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages.
This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day,
21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to
your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts.
In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the
MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current
circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.
SHOWS SEEN
I certainly
will be unable to review all the shows seen in the past week, so I
have had to choose a few and will continue with the rest in another
issue. I have tried my best to cover shows in this issue that have
shows remaining but a more limited run.
GOTHAM GIRLS AT DANNY'S
Tracy Silvia
and Pamela Palmieri are so full of energy and excitement, they just
about cracked the skylight in the ceiling at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM
(342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
when I saw them perform as "The Gotham Girls" last Sunday afternoon.
Its a show about friendship, and this sassy, sparky pair bounce around
the stage in a nos-stop show of song and jest. With an occasional
ballad to allow all of us to catch our breath, and a charming trio
that included musical director Jerry Scott, the show is hopefully
just the first of a number of great "Gotham Girls" shows to come.
There's a disco medley (Mr. Scott is an expert at making a piano sound
like an entire band), and a friendship medley that covers the subject
with just about every friendship song written. Both performers act
and sing in perfect harmony, in a faced-paced hour of true entertainment.
"The Gotham
Girls" (Tracy Silvia and Pamela Palmieri) will return to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT
ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
have one performance of "Take Two!" (the duet show) on Friday, October
10th at 7:00 pm. Cover is $10 ($5 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members),
with a $10 minimum. Go - you will be amazed and entertained.
TOBY BLACKWELL AT THE
DUPLEX
Toby Blackwell
is presenting Part II of his cabaret trilogy at THE DUPLEX CABARET
THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/),
this one called "Bitter." D. Jay Bradley music directs and Maria Gentile
directs this multi-media presentation, which completes a trilogy begun
with Toby's previous Duplex cabaret outings, "Home" and "One Moment,
Please." This tall, handsome lad has led quite a life so far - Mr.
Blackwell has been a gay Naval officer, a theme park singer, and a
perpetual wannabe "Survivor" contestant. In fact, perhaps the show
should be called "Survivor" since through story, video and song, Toby
relates that the incidents in his life so far have given him all the
physical and mental experience needed to be on a reality TV show.
The show finishes with a tribute to the divas - especially the fading
ones - and a special appearance by Whitney Houston via a video and
a parade of divas in "personal" performance. Mr. Blackwell's comments
on these divas are pithy and fun, and the parody songs they sing are
truly inventive and cleverly funny. By the way, this lad's lush, colorful
vocals are amazing - some day he simply must do a serious cabaret
show! I'll be first in line for a reservation.
Toby Blackwell
continues his show "Bitter" at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
on Fridays in October at 7:00 pm, with remaining shows on October
10th, 17th & 24th. There is a $10 cover, 2-drink minimum. It is non-stop
fun from opening video to final diva bow.
SONGS OF DC ANDERSON AT
THE DUPLEX
"NOT FOR
THE SQUEAMISH: the lyrics of D.C. Anderson" opened at THE DUPLEX CABARET
THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
last Friday night, featuring Lennie Watts, Julie Reyburn and Rob Sutton,
musical director Stephen Randoy and bassist Ritt Henn, Directed Mr.
Watts, this 90 minute revue features 23 songs with lyrics by D.C.
Anderson with music by several composers. Included in the roster of
collaborators are Carol Hall, Albert Hague, Elizabeth Doyle, Steven
Landau, Stephen Randoy, Jeff Rizzo, Rick Snyder, Ritt Henn and Billy
Philadelphia. Not all of the songs can be labeled "Not for the Squeamish,"
since several are clearly serious numbers, not intended for comedy
affect. It is a long show - perhaps a short break would be appropriate
at the 50-minute mark - but it indeed is an entertaining one, featuring
the vocals of five of the top talents around (all on stage take part,
often in ensemble, with many duets, trios and solos. While Mr. Anderson
does not take part physically in the show, his words, wisdom and philosophies
on life are threaded into every number. The title song, music by Albert
Hague, opens the show and sets the tone for the evening. It is impossible
to cover the whole show in my one-paragraph limit - suffice it to
say there is never a dull moment, and many, many glorious ones.
This 90-minute
revue will be continue at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
with remaining performances on Fridays, October 10th, 17th, and 24th
at 9:00 pm. Cover charge is $15.00 ($10.00 for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
members) and there is a 2-drink minimum. It is a must-see, not just
for DC Anderson fans, but for lovers of clever, well performed cabaret
from everywhere.
ROCK ALBERS AT THE DUPLEX
Rock Albers
is back - with a vengeance. His new show "Rock 2: The New Rock Albers
Show" had its debut at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
last Saturday at 5:00 pm, and I was there. Just when you thought he
could never be funnier, Rock is back with a killer show! I saw "Rock
1" about a dozen times - and if this show runs for three years like
the last one, I'll see this one two dozen times. With comic foil Dick
Gallagher at the piano (although Dick usually ends up on the winning
side in their many "quip wars"), Mr. Albers once again discusses -
more vehemently perhaps than necessary (but that's the fun of it all)
against such iconic institutions as the Supreme Court, Oklahoma, Wallmart,
James Bond, Corvette designers, Bryant Gimbel, the Lincoln Tunnel
and even Dr. Phil. With about a dozen parody songs, non-stop patter,
the man is unbounded in his enthusiasm, skewed as his comments might
be. His take on Barry Manilow ("self-professed benchmark for ennui")
is a gem I will treasure always.
Rock Albers
continues his new show at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/),
with remaining performances on Saturdays at 5:00 pm, October 11th,
18th, 25th, and Saturdays at 7:00 pm, November 1st, 8th, 15th, and
22nd. Tickets can be purchased through Theatermania.com, Phone: 212-352-3101.
Tickets are $10, and there is a 2-drink minimum. FREE tickets are
available for all CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Members as well as their
guests. (For the Discount Code, e-mail rockalbers@aol.com.) Look for
me there often - laughing, and laughing, and laughing and laughing!
JEANNE MACDONALD AT THE
DUPLEX
Jeanne MacDonald
has returned to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street,
NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
with a new show - the one she debuted at THE BRADSTAN a few weeks
ago. Once again she is ably accompanied by her long-time musical director
Rick Jensen. I have tried for many years to describe Ms. MacDonald's
vocals, but have surrendered to my lexicon, and will only say "uniquely,
incomparably beautiful." That's the best I can do with mere words
- go hear her show and your heart will explain the rest. Rick Jensen
probably came closest to capturing the MacDonald voice in this song
"Amanda Sang," which no amount of denial on his part will make me
believe was not inspired by Jeanne - who just happens to be a music
teacher in a small town in upstate NY. The song is in this show -
and should be in every MacDonald program. The amazing thing about
this show is the way Mr. Jensen has designed the arrangements to best
display Ms. MacDonald's vocals - much the way a jeweler designs a
luxurious setting for a precious gem. "Mountain Greenery" never sounded
quite so "country," and "Big Spender" took on a quality far beyond
mere lyrics. The final song of the main part of the show, "At Last,"
was pure Jeanne MacDonald sound, through and through.
Jeanne MacDonald
continues at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC
- 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
on Saturdays at 7:00 pm, with remaining shows on October 11th, 18th,
and 25th. There is a $15 cover charge - 2 drink minimum - $10 cover
for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Members. The lady has all the right stuff,
and a loving personality that shines through every note. You owe it
to yourself to catch this show and attempt your own definition.
That's all
the "mini-reviews" I have time (and space for) in this issue - we
might add a few to the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE if we
have space.
LOOKING FOR WRITERS TO
COVER THE CABARET CONVENTION
I am just
a bit tired of hassling the MABEL MERCER FOUNDATION folks for tickets
to the Cabaret Convention - I have to pay for my tickets when I attend
when they do their "bus & truck" versions out of town, and have to
settle for "leftovers" when they have the show in NYC - often not
knowing which shows I will see until a day or two before the event.
So, this year, instead of personally covering the convention, I am
looking for folks who already have tickets to write a brief, four
or five paragraph, article about each night. I will refund part of
your ticket cost ($25) via PayPal for each article you write. I prefer
writers who are non-performers, with some writing experience, and
a love for cabaret that includes the ability to present honest evaluations
of performances. No pseudonyms. Please write to me by e-mail if you
wish to cover one or more shows for me. Hopefully we can cover all
7 shows this year.
Meantime,
I will avoid the chore of seeing seven shows of mostly the same old
performers, many of whom have not been seen - as performers - in a
cabaret room in years (if ever). Instead, I plan to attend the shows
in the cabarets that those who are attending the convention will miss
- plus a few cabaret shows presented that week by folks in town to
perform at the convention.
IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE
NEWS & LISTINGS ON MONDAY
It is time
to send out this issue (all 9,260 words) - and finally get my nap
in. Once again I have been at this computer since about 7:00 am (with
a 1-hour break for lunch and an episode of LAW & ORDER) and I still
feel I have done an incomplete job of keeping you up to date on all
the news in cabaret that is fit to print - or at least fits in less
than 10,000 words.
Tonight I
will be seeing Lucille Carr-Kaffashan's show at 6:00 pm at DON'T TELL
MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
and maybe rush across the street to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
to catch Doug Trapp's show at 7:00 pm and then might just hang around
to repeat Joanna Parson & Lance Werth's show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343
West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
at 9:00 pm. I might just have enough energy after that to catch the
first Ricky Ritzel, Leslie Anderson & Scott Barbarino's MERCER A to
Z series at The Backroom at DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC -
212-307-9797) with sets at 10:00 & 11:00 pm & midnight.
Friday night
I will be catching Margaret Wright's show at The Backroom at DILLON'S
(245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) at 8:00 pm.
Saturday
it is a MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/)
double-header with Sir Richard Rodney Bennett & Pinky Winters at 4:00
and Matt Leahy at 7:00 pm.
Sunday, I
plan to be at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC
- 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
at 5:00 pm for the newest version of LOVELY, and then back to MAMA
ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/)
at 7:00 pm for "Breaking Standards" with Candace Mc Ready, Jim Redding,
Nikki Sislian and Patrick DeGennaro.
I sincerely
hope that you will sign on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this
year. The more members we get, the more services we can offer on the
website and in the newsletter. Your membership donation will also
make it possible to get around to more cities and maybe even finally
be able to compensate some of the folks who have been writing reviews
and assisting in the website work - and maybe attract more writers
to contribute material, news and reviews. And more members will ultimately
mean more shows that offer discounts to our members - making every
membership more valuable.
But most
of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me
in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter
and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). Your continued support is truly appreciated!
And that
is just about the way it was.
