CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #031004 - Monday, October 13, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret listings for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. The MID-WEEK issue, usually sent on Thursdays, will concentrate more on news, breaking stories and notes and mini-reviews of shows seen, plus shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

It indeed has been another busy week - with lots of shows taking advantage of the possible cabaret visitors from out of town for next week's Cabaret Convention, and lots of out-of-town performers doing shows in connection with a convention appearance. I've been averaging two shows a night the past several days, and will be seeing two more tonight. I'm hoping to get at least one night off this week - I've been out every night since last Monday.

Interestingly, there have been a number of top rated shows in the past week which went "audience hungry" and even the famous Algonquin has been "papering the house" for newcomer Jamie Cullum via "Audience Extras." Hopefully things will improve this week. Latest reports are that tourists and business travellers have been returning to NYC - hotel occupancy rates are once again approaching 90%. This is good for the entertainment industry because out-of-towners need a place to go in the evening, and cabaret offers a less expensive option than many other entertainment offerings.

Support live entertainment by attending a cabaret show this week - wherever you live or work. Cabaret is not a business, it is an art form, and folks performing in cabaret are supported more by your presence than by your cover charge. There is no greater thrill for a performer than playing to a full house.

FORGOT AGAIN?

Several folks have written that they would be sending in their 2003-2004 membership donation soon, so this is just a reminder. I have been counting on your help in making CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE possible. Hopefully you can keep your promise this week.

I'M LOOKING FOR WRITERS TO COVER THE CABARET CONVENTION

I am just a bit tired of hassling the MABEL MERCER FOUNDATION folks for tickets to the Cabaret Convention - I have to pay for my tickets when I attend when they do their "bus & truck" versions out of town, and have to settle for "leftovers" when they have the show in NYC - often not knowing which shows I will see until a day or two before the event. So, this year, instead of personally covering the convention, I am looking for folks who already have tickets to write a brief, four or five paragraph, article about each night. I will refund part of your ticket cost ($25) via PayPal for each article you write. I prefer writers who are non-performers, with some writing experience, and a love for cabaret that includes the ability to present honest evaluations of performances. No pseudonyms. I have two volunteers already, and hoping for a few more. Please write to me by e-mail if you wish to cover one or more shows for me. Hopefully we can cover all 7 shows this year.

Meantime, I will avoid the chore of seeing seven shows of mostly the same old performers, many of whom have not been seen - as performers - in a cabaret room in years (if ever). Instead, I plan to attend the shows in the cabarets that those who are attending the convention will miss - plus a few cabaret shows presented that week by folks in town to perform at the convention. I am making my list now in case any wish to join me.

MESSAGE BOARD HAS SOME NEW RULES

Nearly every day for the past week or so I have received automated warnings from my internet service provider that the message board file is about to "overflow." So every day - instead of once weekly - I have had to delete messages at the bottom of the board to make room for new messages at the top. So, at least for the time being, several new rules have been placed in effect to help avoid the overflow problem. Please read the new rules I have posted on the website - and if you have not done so lately, read all the rules governing posting on this message board. I welcome your comments by regular e-mail.

Remember, anyone, anywhere, can post information about their shows, CDs or other cabaret-related event on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Message Board. You can also post requests and questions about cabaret performance, and share your thoughts and ideas of cabaret. You don't have to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, you don't have to fill out a form, you don't need one of those dreaded easy-to-forget passwords. All you need to do is follow the rules - clearly posted on the board. I will remove your message if I deem it inappropriate. Fully 70% of visitors to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) visit the MESSAGE BOARD.

In this connection, a number of folks have hesitated to post on the board since the form used for posting a message requires your e-mail address in order to load your message. In the past, folks have copied these e-mail addresses from the board and used them to form their own cabaret e-mail list, sending unsolicited messages to the addressees. To overcome this problem, you are invited to use the e-mail address "nospam@nospam" in that line of the form. Of course, if your message asks for a personal off-board reply, you should use your actual e-mail address.

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available. I have news ready to print about two new cabaret venues - already in operation - but one contains no reservation phone number or cover information, and the other did not include the exact street address.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS

REMEMBER: Each weekly issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes a rundown of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these items will be repeated as long as the banner is running. There is a more complete article on nearly all these items in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

OCTOBER BANNER SLOTS SOLD OUT - NOVEMBER SLOTS SELLING FAST

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are sold out for the rest of October. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as far in advance as possible. A lot of folks want to start advertising their CDs for holiday sales in November, so don't delay getting your order in.

Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.

TIME TO CLOSE & SEND

That's about all for today. After my nap I am heading into town for a "double-header" at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/): Steven Ray Watkins (and friends) at 7:00 pm an the incomparably wild Kristine Zbornik at 9:30 pm.

I want to urge as many folks as possible to join me on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/) to catch the amazingly talented Boston cabaret icon Ida Zecco in her NYC cabaret debut and her show "ESTRO-GIN & TONIC" with Boston's Jim Rice at the piano. I saw this show in Provincetown in May - and I know you will enjoy it. You can double your fun by returning to the same room at 9:00 pm to catch Richard Skipper's award-winning show "An Evening With Carol Channing."

I hope to take Wednesday night off - my first night off since October 6th. But who knows - I might find another exciting cabaret event to attend that night.

Thanks once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these past weeks. We are now listing nearly 325 members, more than three-quarters the way towards out goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Of course it would be great if we could reach an even higher number, but we have many more months to go before the next membership year.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
