CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031005 - Thursday, October 16, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the "MID-WEEK" CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY issue includes
the regular listings for cabarets around the world, and also has information
on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.
This "MID-WEEK" issue covers other news, late breaking stories and
notes on shows seen plus listings of shows offering discounts to CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE members.
It has really
been a strange week for me. After sending out the last issue on Monday,
my landlord dropped by to tell me that on Tuesday the contractor would
arrive to install new windows on the entire building. Sure enough,
at 8:00 am there was a knock on the door - and the chaos began. I
shut down the computer, covered everything with a sheet, and decided
that since I couldn't do any work, I would complete a task I had started
on Friday - helping someone upgrade his MAC to a new operating system,
and fixing some issues he was having with his AOL program. When I
arrived home at around 4:00 pm to shower, shave, etc., and head into
town for a cabaret show or two, they were still at work, and the place
was a total disaster. Apparently they had to break the old windows
to remove them, cut out the iron window frames, then put in the new
ones.
When they
finally left, and they had cleaned up the mess, I had no time to get
ready to make it to town for Ida Zecco's "ESTRO-GIN & TONIC" show
left on at 7:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street,
NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/).
I had a chance to hook-up the computer and e-mail Phil Bond to change
my reservation to this coming Tuesday night, October 21st at 7:00
pm. Those in NYC not attending the cabaret convention that night are
urged to join me.
But by taking
most of Friday and all of Tuesday away from the computer, I have fallen
hopelessly behind in my work, so I took off Wednesday night from cabaret
in an attempt to catch up. I have about a dozen "breaking news" stories
ready to be coded for the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
and I'll see how much I can get done after this newsletter goes out
and over the weekend.
EMPTY SEATS ARE A TOTAL
LOSS
Remember,
an empty seat brings you no income at all - a seat filled with a member
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at a discount brings you extra income, plus
a walking-talking advertisement for you and your show. CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE members are all cabaret lovers and are all "internet savvy"
- if they like your show, they are going to spread the word, almost
immediately.
There are
nearly two-dozen shows currently playing here in NYC offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! If a SILVER ($20) just attends
4 of these offerings, they would have the cost of their membership
back - and would still be able to use that $20 towards a banner ad
in the membership year!
In addition,
shows offering the discount get a free listing in the MIDWEEK issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! For the many folks who ask to be listed
here, this is a way to be sure your show gets mentioned! And a brief
item on your show will be placed on the MEMBER DEALS page - with a
photo if you send one. If you send me a press release for the BREAKING
NEWS page, your article link will also be "flagged" with the discount
notation.
You don't
have to even be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to offer the discount.
(But I certainly would appreciate your membership donation, and your
membership will make it possible for you to get discounts to other
folks' shows.)
LET'S TRY FOR 350 BY OCTOBER
31st
The CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE Membership roster continues to grow - with members
all over the USA as well as Canada, the UK and Australia. We're close
to 325 - headed for our 400 Member goal. And if you can't afford the
$20 SILVER membership cost, drop me a line - a number of folks have
donated extra funds above the membership donation amount to help out
folks just like you! I currently have 3 memberships to give away.
Your "free" SILVER membership will allow you to deduct $20 from your
first banner ad in a membership year, allow you to have your CD listed
in the CD SALE section, get discounts on cabaret shows and other events
where offered, and get a listing on the appropriate SILVER MEMBER
page.
It has to
be first-come, first-served, so let me know right away if you feel
you need to take advantage of this offer. All will be in confidence
- the persons making the donations do not even wish to know your name.
And if, later this membership year, you can afford the membership,
you can make the donation to make it possible for us to offer someone
else a free membership.
For information
on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check
at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via
PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
- if you make your donation by check, please make the check payable
simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York,
NY 10036.
LOOKING FOR WRITER TO
COVER THE SUNDAY CABARET CONVENTION SHOW
I won't be
attending the NY "cabaret convention" this year - I am just a bit
tired of hassling the MABEL MERCER FOUNDATION folks for tickets. I
always seem to have to settle for "leftovers" when they have the show
in NYC - often not knowing which shows I will see until a day or two
before the event, so I didn't even ask this time. Instead, several
folks who already have tickets will write a brief, four or five paragraph,
article about each night. I will refund part of your ticket cost ($25)
via PayPal for each article. I have every show "covered" except the
Sunday show - always difficult to get tickets for because the folks
who own TOWN HALL reserve about 2/3s of the house for their members.
If you have a ticket and would like to send in your thoughts, let
me know.
Meantime,
I will avoid the chore of seeing seven shows of mostly the same old
performers, many of whom have not been seen - as performers - in a
cabaret room in years (if ever). Instead, I plan to attend the shows
in the cabarets that those who are attending the convention will miss
- plus a few cabaret shows presented that week by folks in town to
perform at the convention.

I'M LOOKING FOR EVEN MORE
NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
etc. Add a website link if available.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information
about other shows around the country and around the world can be found
on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send
me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your
flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out
a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often
have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim
quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using
the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when
putting together the four or more paragraphs.

OCTOBER BANNER SLOTS SOLD
OUT - NOVEMBER SLOTS SELLING FAST
BANNER AD
spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website are completely sold out
for October. Keep in mind, I limit the ads to 20 banners per week,
so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as far
in advance as possible. A lot of folks want to start advertising their
CDs for holiday sales in November, so don't delay getting your order
in.
Banner ads
are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 2,500+ pages.
This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day,
21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to
your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts.
In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the
MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current
circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single
word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.
SHOWS SEEN
I have a
backlog of 13 cabaret reviews to write - all shows seen in the past
two weeks. So, once again I have had to choose a few and will continue
with the rest in another issue.
LYNNE ROBINSON AT DANNY'S
Lynne Robinson
made her solo cabaret debut to DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th
Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
a few weeks ago, and I was able to make it to her final show on Sunday,
October 5th at 2:00 pm. I was amazed at this lady's enthusiasm and
energy. Her show was called "More Than 16 Bars" and focused on the
fact that she had gone to her musical director, Jerry Scott, with
the idea of rehearsing for a Broadway audition - traditionally a very
brief performance of 16 bars. But she discovered that working on her
craft was so much fun, she didn't wish to settle for 16-bar samples,
but instead do a whole cabaret show with complete songs. Along with
director Andy Praskai, this show developed. Ms. Robinson is a lyric
soprano, with very credible vocal control. Her songs were mostly "show
tunes" and quite often, when done outside of the original show they
appeared in, there is an attempt to adopt the original emotion and
style of the theater production, rather than adapting the song for
a cabaret presentation. Thus the show becomes a vocal/theatrical presentation,
rather than the personalized presentation that the intimacy of cabaret
requires. Consequently each song stands alone, rather than being connected
with songs that preceded and followed the song. But this is a debut,
and Ms. Robinson provided a terrific hour of entertainment. And there
is no denying that when it comes to show tunes, Gerry Scott is an
expert.
LAURA PEARSON AT DANNY'S
I stayed
at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133
- http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
on October 5th to catch Laura Pearson's show "Is It the Girl or Is
It the Gown," a very fascinating show that featured Paul Trueblood
as musical director, with direction by Marjorie Beddow. Ms. Pearson
brings with her to cabaret her long experience in the major showrooms
in Las Vegas and Paris, and once can easily see why. She is tall,
statuesque, and absolutely stunning as she sings a series of songs
- in a series of gowns, in a most exciting and entertaining hour of
fun. Her vocals are incredible - the result being that I enjoyed the
girl even more than the gowns, which were incredible in their own
right. After her showgirl career, Ms. Pearson entered the corporate
world - quite successfully - for a number of years, and this show
marked her return to the world of entertainment. There are boas and
feathered fans, lots of sparkling costumes, and more fun than one
should be allowed to have on a Sunday afternoon. Unlike Ms. Robinson's
show, seen earlier, each song built on the previous, following various
recent events in Ms. Pearson's life, including an "almost" marriage
segment that just might deserve a whole show if its own. Once again
Mr. Trueblood added just the right balance between accompanist and
foil for Ms. Pearson's asides, and was right in sync with this rather
fast-paced show. Some of the songs on the list I have heard often
in other shows, yet placed in this setting, with the very talented
and self-confident Laura Pearson in charge, they were refreshingly
new again.
Laura Pearson's
"Is It the Girl or Is It the Gown" show has been extended at DANNY'S
SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
for two more performances, on Saturday, October 25th at 7:00 pm and
Sunday October 26th at 6:15 pm. There is a $16 cover, $10 food/drink
minimum. NO COVER FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE & MAC, AEA Members. Did
she say free? Wow!
CONNIE PACHL & BILL DOUGHERTY
AT DON'T TELL MAMA
Following
Laura Pearson's show, I crossed the street on Sunday, October 5th
to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
for "Let's Duet: a Celebration of Friendship & Song" featuring Connie
Pachl and Bill Daugherty, at 5:30 pm. Musical director was Doyle Newmeyer,
with Jim Conant on guitar. Both Connie and Bill are wonderful vocalists
and fantastic entertainers, and it was a treat to see cabaret pros
in action. Unfortunately, both have been away from cabaret for some
time, and hopefully this series of shows will forge a great partnership
that will result in many more such productions in the future. Most
of the songs were about friendship, including the original opening
number "We're Here," written by Ralph Affoumado and Mr. Dougherty.
Both have their roots in the south, and actually have been friends
since they met in St. Louis in 1987. It was like a family gathering,
with songs of small town kids who come to NYC for fame and fortune.
There is a rather tedious Broadway medley, but otherwise the duets
and solos demonstrate remarkable vocals - with Mr. Dougherty's Irish
tenor at times hitting higher notes than Ms. Pachl's soprano! There
is even a segment featuring a mandolin, played by Mr. Conant (who
happens to be Ms. Pachl's husband). How often do you hear a mandolin
in cabaret?
Connie Pachl
& Bill Dougherty continue their show "Let's Duet" at DON'T TELL MAMA
(343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
with shows on Sundays in October at 5:30 pm and Fridays in November
at 6:30 pm. It is not just a celebration of friendship, but also a
celebration of the long-awaited return of two great cabaret talents.
GOLDIE DVER AT THE DUPLEX
On Wednesday,
October 8th, I travelled downtown to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61
Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
for Goldie Dver's new show "Woman On The Stage" at 7:00 pm. The show
tells the story of career vs. family, and the way-of-life threatening
condition of "getting older." With direction by James Beaman, with
additional direction for this production is by Mickey Coburn. Musical
direction is by the multi-talented Tracy Stark. I have watched Ms.
Dver's development as a cabaret performer over several years, and
it seems like each time she steps on stage her performance is better
than the last. This show brings out the very best in her, and she
brings out the best in every note she sings. A very poignant song
called "Back Home" (Drey Shepperd & Gerrard Kenny) included such touching
lyrics, and was performed so precisely, I left the show mulling over
its message. Halfway through the show, Ms. Dver turned the stage over
to her guest to Lennie Watts who did an amazing rendition of "Cry."
A duet with Mr. Watts (Tom Waits' "I Never Talk to Strangers") was
simply delightful. Ms. Stark's arrangements were eloquent, and the
entire evening was focused and entertaining. Kudos to Mr. Beaman.
Brava to Ms. Dver. Bravo to Mr. Watts.
Goldie Dver,
2002 MAC Award winner continues her show "Woman On The Stage" at THE
DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/)
with remaining performances are Wednesdays, October 22nd, and 29th
at 7:00 pm. You don't want to miss this exciting and entertaining
show.
SHARON MCNIGHT AT MAMA
ROSE'S
Sharon McNight
is in an extended series of shows at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue,
NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/)
and I headed over there on Wednesday, October 8th, to catch the 9:30
pm show. It was well worth the trip. The show is called "Ladies Compose
Yourselves!" and salutes ladies who write the songs, especially composers
still writing today. The opening song, "Shall We Join The Ladies"
is the only one not written by a lady (Marshall Barer) but does salute
the ladies. Most of the songs are of a comedy bent - after all, it
is the diva of musical comedy performing here, but occasionally Ms.
McNight pauses to perform a number that gives everyone pause. Liz
McNamara, Adryan Russ, Amanda McBroom & Michele Brourman, Babbie Green,
Beckie Menzie & Cheri Coons, Karen Gottlieb and even Ms. McNight herself
are among the songwriters represented in the show. It is an informal,
fun-packed show that perfectly showcases this very amazing lady's
talents - her flair for finding the right facial expression for every
phrase is uncanny. Every moment is relaxed, yet there is never a moment
where your mind wanders from the performance. Musical director, Steven
Ray Watkins was able to keep pace with Ms. McNight, while holding
back laughter - an amazing feat to be sure.
Ms. McNight
continues at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 -
http://www.mamaroses.net/)
with remaining shows scheduled for Wednesdays, October 22nd & 29th
at 9:30 pm and Saturday, October 18th at 7:00 pm. Additional performances
are on Mondays, November 3rd & 10th at 9:30 pm and Sunday, November
9th at 4:00 pm. There is a $20.00 music charge and a 2-drink minimum.
You have plenty of chances to catch this show - so you have no excuse
for missing one of the most talented and entertaining ladies in cabaret
today - and in fact I suggest you go now so you have a chance to see
it again.
That's all
the "mini-reviews" I have time (and space for) in this issue and I
have so many more to write!
TOO MUCH NEWS?
A few subscribers
have written in complaining that there is simply too much news in
each issue to absorb - yet I continue to get lots of letters from
folks for being included in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and even more
that want to me mentioned. I am at a loss to solve this - I certainly
don't want to go to 3 issues a week. Please drop me a line with your
comments, thoughts and suggestions. Thanks.
IT'S TIME TO GO - MORE
NEWS & LISTINGS ON MONDAY
Time to go
- after my daily nap I am off to town to pick up my mail and catch
Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX show, with guests Alix Korey and
David Friedman (currently appearing UPSTAIRS AT STUDIO 54 in a revue
of David's songs) and then probably back home to get back to work.
Friday night
I hope to catch Terry Tyrell at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street,
NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) at 7:00 pm, followed
by Michael McAssey's show at 9:30 pm at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue,
NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/).
Saturday, I want to catch Beth Valenti's last show at 7:00 pm at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
before she moves to Florida. On Sunday, I will sit down with all my
schedules and see which shows I will see during Cabaret Convention
week - I'll probably publish the schedule on the website as sort of
a "picks of the week" type of article. I have no cabaret plans for
Sunday, but who knows?
I sincerely
hope that you will sign on as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members this
year. The more members we get, the more services we can offer on the
website and in the newsletter. Your membership donation will also
make it possible to get around to more cities and maybe even finally
be able to compensate some of the folks who have been writing reviews
and assisting in the website work - and maybe attract more writers
to contribute material, news and reviews. And more members will ultimately
mean more shows that offer discounts to our members - making every
membership more valuable.
But most
of all, your membership donation is a way for you to encourage me
in my efforts to promote the art of cabaret, and support this newsletter
and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). Your continued support is truly appreciated!
And that
is just about the way it was.
