CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031007 - Thursday, October 23, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a
MONDAY plus MIDWEEK Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - explanation
below - which includes cabaret listings for around the world, and
also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website plus more news, breaking stories and notes,
and news on shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE. Reviews will appear in another issue to be sent on Friday
- with additional "late news" items.
This has
been "the week that was!" Following the rules of "Murphy's Law," anything
that could go wrong, did. I am a very patient person. I have been
raised in a home where swearing and cursing were not permitted. In
the past I have faced frustration with perseverance and determination.
All of this was put to the test this week.
I pride myself
in being a "computer expert" (I was a computer programmer in a previous
life for about 20 years). As everyone is aware, the prime rule when
working with a computer is to make backups of all your important files
at least once a week. But I have been a bit busy lately, so early
Saturday I decided to do a backup of my website files while I had
breakfast - something I had no done for about six weeks. But, being
a little sleepy, in error I somehow reversed the procedure, and copied
the backup I made on August 30th over my current files. Six weeks
of work obliterated. There are now nearly 3,000 pages on my website
and well over 700 photos. You should have heard the words that came
from my mouth!
But, I didn't
panic for long. No problem, I realized. All the files - right up to
date - were also on my ISP's server, located somewhere in Michigan.
So, all I had to do was download those files back to my computer drives
here in Queens. Sure, it would take several hours or so, but there
was grocery shopping and housecleaning to do. I relaxed, and calmly
set up everything for the download and hooked on to the internet through
my DSL line. Little did I know that the wonderful folks at VERIZON
had chosen the weekend to upgrade some DSL equipment - a job that
would last through Monday - with only intermittent service available
here in Long Island City all weekend.
It was late
Monday afternoon before things were operating properly, the download
was completed, and a backup made immediately after to both my external
hard drive and to my iBook. The plan was to move operations, via the
iBook, to one of those "hotspots" if my DSL line failed again. But
all my deadlines had passed, the newsletter for Monday was totally
out of date, and I "scrubbed" publication until today - thus the "combined"
issue.
NYC CABARET CONVENTION
REPORTS ON THE WEBSITE
Thanks to
the fine work of Alan Krul, reports the first two shows of the NYC
MABEL MERCER CONVENTION are already on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
with the third report to be added after this issue is sent out. A
special thank you to all who volunteered to write for CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE this year and permit me to avoid the task.
What a relief
for me! Imagine, after what I went through over the weekend, having
to sit in an uncomfortable balcony seat for three hours or so at THE
TOWN HALL. Instead I could stay at home and write up a bunch of articles
for the website, and sort out things on my hard drives. In fact, I
downloaded a program that now automatically copies my important files
to a backup area on the external drive every time I shut down my computer
- or any time I wish. The important thing about making a mistake is
learning from the mistake!
SPECIAL TO MY SISTER IN
FLORIDA
No, I did
not forget your birthday on October 21st - Chelsea Hudgins will attest
to that fact. She was sitting next to me at Eve Eaton's show at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
on Tuesday night when I remembered it. What I did forget was to send
you a birthday card - the craziness of the weekend is to blame. Happy
Birthday! I have decided to solve this problem by buying a birthday
card for each of my three sisters on January 1st and mailing them
off with the notation on the outside "Do Not Open Until Your Birthday."

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR
MORE NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available. I have news ready
to print about two new cabaret venues - already in operation - but
one contains no reservation phone number or cover information, and
the other did not include the exact street address.
A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER:
Each weekly issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes
a rundown of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these
items will be repeated as long as the banner is running. There is
a more complete article on nearly all these items in the BREAKING
NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

NOVEMBER BANNER AD SLOTS
SELLING FAST
BANNER AD
spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website were sold out for the
month of October, we had to turn down several requests. Keep in mind,
I limit the ads to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a
banner, reserve your banner space as far in advance as possible. A
lot of folks will want to start advertising their CDs for holiday
sales in November & December, so don't delay getting your order in.
Banner ads
are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 3,000 pages. This
means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000
times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website,
if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition,
those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly
2,500) as long as the banner is running.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
MEMBERSHIP CLOSE TO 325
Nearly 325
of the nearly 2,500 subscribers to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE have joined
as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this year. Have you joined yet?
I have tried to make the membership as inexpensive as possible, with
more benefits than ever - including discounts on selected cabaret
shows. If you find these messages and the information and news on
the website of value, then I hope you will consider becoming a member
today. I depend on your membership donations and the banner ads to
make this service possible. You can join for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL),
or get special discounts and additional benefits with a $75 (GOLD)
donation (20% discount on banners, etc.), or become a sponsoring member
at higher levels.
For information
on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check
at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com
with the single word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details. You can even send your donation by credit card via
PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml

EMPTY SEATS ARE A TOTAL
LOSS
Remember,
an empty seat brings you no income at all - a seat filled with a member
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at a discount brings you extra income, plus
a walking-talking advertisement for you and your show. CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE members are all cabaret lovers and are all "internet savvy"
- if they like your show, they are going to spread the word, almost
immediately.
There are
nearly two-dozen shows currently playing here in NYC offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! If a SILVER ($20) just attends
4 of these offerings, they would have the cost of their membership
back - and would still be able to use that $20 towards a banner ad
in the membership year!
In addition,
shows offering the discount get a free listing in the MIDWEEK issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! For the many folks who ask to be listed
here, this is a way to be sure your show gets mentioned! And a brief
item on your show will be placed on the MEMBER DEALS page - with a
photo if you send one. If you send me a press release for the BREAKING
NEWS page, your article link will also be "flagged" with the discount
notation.
You don't
have to even be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to offer the discount.
(But I certainly would appreciate your membership donation, and your
membership will make it possible for you to get discounts to other
folks' shows.)

How do you
get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send
me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your
flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out
a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often
have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim
quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using
the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when
putting together the four or more paragraphs.

SHOWS SEEN
No space
left - and a lot more to tell, so I will be sending out a special
"reviews & news" issue tomorrow.
IT'S TIME TO GO
I must quit
now - I went well over my 10,000 word limit - even after trimming
a number of items, including the mini-reviews. Stay tuned - there
will be a special issue tomorrow (Friday) and then more news & listing
on Monday. Tonight I am off to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
to catch singer/songwriter Joe Rux at 7:00 pm, and then to DANNY'S

And that
is just about the way it was.
