CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031101 - Monday, November 3, 2003
Since
1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a
MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret listings
for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner
ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website plus more news,
breaking stories and notes. The MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays,
includes more news, breaking stories and notes, news on shows offering
discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, plus mini-reviews
on shows I have seen.
I hope we
finally solved the DSL problem here in Long Island City. "The Man
from Verizon" and I had a two-hour chat on Saturday and together (he
in Texas and I in NY) did a number of tests, did some tweaking to
my software, and things have gone well since. It seems that most of
the problems arise on the weekends - I can't seem to stay on line
for more than a few minutes on Saturdays and Sundays - and now he
is checking if there might be a "power user" in my area who hogs all
the network capacity, possibly playing an on-line game or something.
I apparently am at the far end of the nearest DSL router's reach.
Fingers are crossed.
If you've
taken a peek at the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE webcam views lately, you
will have noted that the trees in my backyard (except for the evergreens)
are quickly changing from green to gold. We have had a few nippy days
here, mixed with some warm ones (its supposed to get close to 70 degrees
(f) today, but the rest of the week we should see temperatures climbing
only to the mid-50s with a lot of cold nights ahead. "Brisk" they
call it - and great for sleeping!
SAD NEWS
A. Michael

for troubled youth, which operated over 25 years in the Berkshire
region of Western Massachusetts, passed away after complications of
surgery involving a kidney transplant, on Saturday evening, November
1st, at 5:00 pm. The school also sponsored the DESISTO/STOCKBRIDGE

NYC CABARET CONVENTION
REPORTS ON THE WEBSITE
Thanks to
the fine work of Alan Kull, Adryan Russ and Sally Morgan, reports
on five of the shows of the NYC MABEL MERCER CONVENTION are already
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).
Please note: due to unforeseen circumstances, the Friday show was
not covered, as well as the Sunday show. I am attempting to put together
some type of report on those two shows. If you attended either of
these convention performances and wish to add a comment or two, please
send in your thoughts. A special thank you to the folks who volunteered
to write for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this year and permit me to avoid
the task spending about 20 hours or so in those very uncomfortable
balcony seats at TOWN HALL. It indeed was a relief, and it also allowed
me to see several shows I would have missed if I went to the convention.
I might even do this next year!
DO YOU HAVE A HOLIDAY-THEMED
CD?
Once again
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is listing holiday-themed CDs on a special
page of the website for those looking for that special "stocking-stuffer"
or the perfect CD to have on hand for those holiday events that need
music in the background. If you have a holiday-themed CD, let me know
- with a link to your website or the web address where it can be purchased.
And of your holiday CD is already listed (I started with the list
from last year) please check if the link is still correct and working.
You need not be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to be listed on
this page - but your support would be appreciated.
DO YOU HAVE A HOLIDAY-THEMED
CABARET SHOW?
I will also
be adding a special section to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
(http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/) listing holiday-themed shows
around the country, and will include these show listings in the newsletter
after Thanksgiving (November 27th). Send in your listing - but please
include complete information and do not simply send me a copy of your
flier or show card.

NYC MARATHON FUNNIER THIS
YEAR
If you were
in - or more likely watching - the NYC Marathon yesterday (Sunday,
November 2nd) - and wondered what all the laughing was about along
the way, it was because MAC & Bistro Award winning comics Ron Poole
and Nancy Witter took part this year, and actually completed the 17-mile+
course. Now it wasn't the jokes they were telling that caused all
the laughs, but the sight of Ron in running shorts, and Nancy hefting
a six-pack of Rolling Rock in her backpack - and tossing the empties
into the cheering crowds along the way. Ron and Nancy are resting
comfortably and hope to be able to appear this Saturday doing their
usual stand-up comedy stuff - if they can stand - at "The Poole Party"
at 8:30 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmama.com/).

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR
MORE NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available. I have news ready
to print about two new cabaret venues - already in operation - but
one contains no reservation phone number or cover information, and
the other did not include the exact street address.
A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER:
Each weekly issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes
a rundown of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these
items will be repeated as long as the banner is running. There is
a more complete article on nearly all these items in the BREAKING
NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/).

NOVEMBER BANNER AD SLOTS
SELLING FAST
BANNER AD
spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website were sold out this week,
the first week in November and we continue to receive reservations
for banner slots in the weeks to come. Keep in mind, I limit the ads
to 20 banners per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve
your banner space as far in advance as possible. A lot of folks will
want to start advertising their CDs for holiday sales in November
& December, so don't delay getting your order in.
Banner ads
are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 3,000 pages. This
means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000
times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website,
if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition,
those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly
2,500) as long as the banner is running.
For information
on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml),
or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
MEMBERSHIP SURPASSES 325!
Nearly 350
of the nearly 2,500 subscribers to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE have joined
as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this year. Have you joined yet?
I have tried to make the membership as inexpensive as possible, with
more benefits than ever - including discounts on selected cabaret
shows. If you find these messages and the information and news on
the website of value, then I hope you will consider becoming a member
today. I depend on your membership donations and the banner ads to
make this service possible. You can join for just $20 (SILVER LEVEL),
or get special discounts and additional benefits with a $75 (GOLD)
donation (20% discount on banners, etc.), or become a sponsoring member
at higher levels.
For information
on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check
at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml
or else just send me a note at membership@svhamstra.com with the single
word "membership" in the subject line, and I'll send all the details.
You can even send your donation by credit card via PayPal - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/PayPalPayment.shtml
- if you make your donation by check, please make the check payable
simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York,
NY 10036.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Thanks to
all the folks who joined as members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this
year - plus a few special gifts - I have nearly paid down my credit
card and am ready to travel around to see cabaret in several cities
this fall and winter. It has been far too long since my last visit
to the West Coast, so a trip to San Francisco and Los Angeles is already
planned for mid-December. I want to visit THE PLUSH ROOM in San Francisco
before it closes for renovation at the end of the year, and see the
new CINEGRILL as well, plus visit my friends in both towns, including
my former co-workers and employers at the home of Cabaret.Org in Fullerton.
Visits are also in the planning stages to Boston (my second favorite
town after NYC), Providence, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Miami, Chicago
and maybe a return to New Orleans. Now to coordinate club schedules
with AMTRAK and airline schedules. If we surpass our 400 member goal
I might even chance a trip to London and to Australia next summer
to catch the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and the Sydney Cabaret Convention.
Stay tuned.
OFFERING A DISCOUNT TO
YOUR SHOW IS A WISE INVESTMENT
Remember,
you don't lose money when you offer a discount to your cabaret show
- you fill more seats! An empty seat brings you no income at all -
a seat filled with a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at a discount
brings you extra income, plus a walking-talking advertisement for
you and your show. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members are all cabaret
lovers and are all "internet savvy" - if they like your show, they
are going to spread the word, almost immediately.
There are
nearly two-dozen shows currently playing here in NYC offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! New shows are lining up to offer
our members these savings. Shows offering the discount get a free
listing in the MIDWEEK issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! You don't
have to even be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to offer the discount.
(But I certainly would appreciate your membership donation, and your
membership will make it possible for you to get discounts to other
folks' shows.)
IS AN ITEM ABOUT YOU POSTED
IN THIS ISSUE?
After every
issue I get a few e-mails from folks wondering why their show wasn't
mentioned. Well, it is simply impossible to mention every show running
- there are over 100 cabaret shows in a dozen or so venues running
each week in NYC alone, plus other shows happening all over the USA
and the world. But you should note that I will mention your show in
every MONDAY issue if you have a banner ad running - and every MID-WEEK
issue if you are offering a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE (if you include this information on your fliers and press releases).
Other items are added on a space-available basis, keeping in mind
that, since most banner ads and show discounts cover NYC area shows,
I am more likely to choose a show from outside the NYC area to give
balance to each issue.
IT'S TIME TO GO
I haven't
run out of time - it's not quite noon - but I have run out of space
in this issue. Now I can get back to adding items to the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
- the DSL line has been behaving all weekend, and continues to keep
my connection, so this is the best time to get my work done.
Tonight I
am off to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC -
1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
to see Michelle Colleary's new show (and if I spell out the name I
will go over my word-count limit) at 7:00 pm, and then head up to
REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com)
to help everyone celebrate Ruby Rim's 50th Birthday. Tomorrow I catch
Lynn DiMenna at 7:00 pm at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street,
NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
and then head downtown to catch cabaret-newcomer Gregory Maro at 9:00
pm. On Wednesday I'll be back at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th
Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
for Tennie Leonard's show with the songs of Mary Martin. Next issue
on Thursday - if all goes well.
Thanks once
more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these
past weeks. We are now listing almost 350 members, as we make our
way the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Of course
it would be great if we could reach an even higher number, but we
have many more months to go before the next membership year.
And that
is just about the way it was.
