CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #031102 - Thursday, November 6, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MIDWEEK Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes news, breaking stories and notes, and news on shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE plus, soon returning, mini-reviews of shows I have seen.

Its a real puzzle - I am attempting to get the news on cabaret around the world to all my subscribers, and whenever I try to do my best, I run into problems. First off, AOL seems to either truncate or compress the newsletter when it runs over a certain length - but that length seems to vary from subscriber to subscriber. I don't use AOL so I don't exactly know what the problem is. If someone out there know how to prevent this, please let me know. It might just be a setting change on the e-mail program that AOL provides.

Most AOL readers seem to get the complete issue, while others complain that it isn't coming through. I have been shortening the issues whenever possible - and even foregoing the reviews for a few weeks while I try to solve the problem.

One solution would be to send the issue in PDF format - which you can open with ACROBAT READER - nearly everyone has this program. Another would be to simply post the issue on the website, and e-mail everyone a note that a new issue is there - and include a link to find it quickly.

Next problem is the increasing use of spam filters and content filters that cause newsletters to "bounce back" to me. Some of these filters reject the issues if they use certain words in the content of the articles - whatever happened to free speech? Some folks have a spam-prevent program installed that blocks the newsletter unless I send a second request to a second address asking permission. I simply don't have time for that, and I hope the practice doesn't increase.

Please note that as soon as I send an issue I try to get a copy of the newsletter on my website - you can find the posting by checking the 'WHAT'S NEW' page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/). You never need to miss reading an issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE even if AOL or some filter doesn't want you to read it.

Stay tuned.

IMPORTANT CORRECTION

I stand corrected. In the last issue I said that the NYC Marathon was 17 miles - turns out it is over 26 miles in length. Quite frankly, I find the event a bore, but then again, I find all such pointless exercise boring. I've been that way all my life - my mom even bought me a dog when I was about 10 years old, in an effort to get me to exercise more. I was much happier reading a book (we didn't have a TV until 1952, when I was about 13 years old). But I discovered that if I borrowed the clothesline from the backyard (we didn't have a clothes drier until 1955), I could sit on the front porch and read, while the dog could get all the way to the fire hydrant at the end of the rope, and at least four decent-sized trees were in range. For some reason the dog disappeared after about three or four months.

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available.

NOVEMBER BANNER AD SLOTS SELLING FAST

BANNER AD spaces on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website were sold out for the month of October, and the first week of November sold out as well. I have just one slot left on the week that starts this Sunday. Keep in mind, I limit the banners to just 20 per week, so if you plan to order a banner, reserve your banner space as far in advance as possible. A lot of folks will want to start advertising their CDs for holiday sales in November & December, so don't delay getting your order in.

Banner ads are displayed at random in two places on nearly all 3,000 pages. This means your ad could be seen as many as 3,000 times each day, 21,000 times each week! You can run a banner for 2 weeks on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for just $80 - in full color - with a "live link" to your website, if applicable. That's before any member rebates or discounts. In addition, those running banners get mentioned every week in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE e-mail newsletter (current circulation nearly 2,500) as long as the banner is running.

For information on banner ads, check out the banner information page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/BannerHere.shtml), or simply send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com with the single word "Banner" in the subject line and I send the details.

FILL THOSE SEATS WITH CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBERS

Remember, an empty seat brings you no income at all - a seat filled with a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at a discount brings you extra income, plus a walking-talking advertisement for you and your show. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members are all cabaret lovers and are all "internet savvy" - if they like your show, they are going to spread the word, almost immediately.

There are nearly two-dozen shows currently playing here in NYC offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! If a SILVER ($20) just attends 4 or 5 of these events, they would have the cost of their membership back - and would still be able to use that $20 towards a banner ad in the membership year!

In addition, shows offering the discount get a free listing in the MIDWEEK issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE! For the many folks who ask to be listed here, this is a way to be sure your show gets mentioned! And a brief item on your show will be placed on the MEMBER DEALS page - with a photo if you send one. If you send me a press release for the BREAKING NEWS page, your article link will also be "flagged" with the discount notation.

You don't have to even be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to offer the discount. (But I certainly would appreciate your membership donation, and your membership will make it possible for you to get discounts to other folks' shows.)
