CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #031106 - Thursday, November 20, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MIDWEEK Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes news, breaking stories and notes, and news on shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

The holidays seem to be rushing towards us in full force - it seems that every day I get a news item or an invitation regarding a holiday cabaret show in the works. In fact, I am really looking forward to my favorite annual holiday show, D. Jay Bradley's Christmas Show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) - now in its seventh year! But first I have to make it through Thanksgiving, celebrated here in the US on November 27th. I have a big list of things to be thankful for - and will be publishing a special edition of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on Thursday, the 27th in place of the regular MIDWEEK issue on that date.

SOME THOUGHTS TO SHARE

There is a rumor going around that you can't make money in cabaret. Well, its partly true: some folks do quite well, but many others lose money just about every show. But this should not come as any surprise. Remember, in cabaret the performer is also the producer - handling all the expenses, arranging advertising, paying the musicians, covering the room fee, etc. Just take a look at the Broadway producers - how many of them (or at least their investors) ever make money on their productions? And they have millions to spend on sets, costumes, musicians and theater rental. They spend thousands of dollars on TV and newspaper advertising. Yet most shows are financial flops. There are several shows that recently opened on Broadway that will be close after just a few weeks in performance - one just closed out of town, another closed in previews - before it officially opened. One closed after just one official performance. Millions of dollars were lost by the producers and investors. Some of the money may be recouped by sales of CD "Original Cast Recordings," and some of the investment might be returned in out-of-town tours, which usually can be mounted with less expense.

Sound familiar? Many cabaret shows make a profit eventually because the performer also has CDs available for sale at the show (one performer reportedly pays her publicist with CDs for him to sell after the show!). Other performers get out-of-town bookings based on the reviews they receive. Others use the material and arrangements from their shows when they get gigs at private parties, on cruise ships or country club dates.

By the way, it is reported that at any given time, over 90% of performers who belong to Actors Equity are working in a job other than the theater (or not working at all), as they await their big break. Most cabaret performers can make their own "big break" because they are also producers, scheduling their shows at their own convenience, and avoiding the chore (and sometimes humiliation) of auditions, etc. They can write their own material, pick their own songs, choose their own musicians, design their own ad campaign, and even choose where and when they perform. But they also take the risks - but who can measure the value of that applause and the sheer joy of performing?

Now, on with the news:

CORRECTION

I was in such a rush on Monday to get the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE out I included an item and forgot to add the name of the performer! That's what happens when you "cut & paste" and forget one "paste." Here is the way these two items should have been listed:

CHEZ SUZETTE (675B Ninth Avenue, NYC - 1-212-974-9002 - http://www.chezsuzettenyc.com/) - Australian cabaret legend Janet Seidel celebrates the release of her new CD on Sunday, November 23rd at 7:00 pm prior to her tour in Japan. For more information, see http://www.janetseidel.com/.

REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com) - Australian cabaret legend Janet Seidel celebrates the release of her new CD on Sunday, November 30th at the brunch show at 2:00 pm prior to her tour in Japan. For more information, see http://www.janetseidel.com/.

From what I hear from my friends in Australia, this lady is one of the best - I hope many will give her a great welcome on her brief visit here.

"LISTEN TO MY HEART" CONTINUES - TV SEGMENT AIRS AS WELL

"LISTEN TO MY HEART: The Songs of David Friedman" now playing UPSTAIRS AT STUDIO 54 (254 West 54th Street, NYC - Tele-Charge: 212-239-6200 - http://www.telecharge.com/) was to close on Sunday, November 16th, but at the last minute, thanks to a surge in ticket sales and some new funding, is continuing for at least another week or two. Hopefully this will give their new marketing plan to take hold and ticket sales will continue to increase - extending the show even longer. Here's your chance to see a brilliant show featuring songs that cabaret-lovers have come to love and enjoy, and encourage the backers to keep the show going. The brilliant cast includes Allison Briner, Joe Cassidy, David Friedman, Michael Hunsaker, Alix Korey, Anne Runolfsson and the show is directed by Mark Waldrop. There are still Special $25 discount tickets available - Call Tele-Charge at 212 -239-6200 and use code LHDFEM9 - check the website at http://www.ListenToMyHeartSite.com/ for details.

David Friedman, with Allison Briner singing "You'll Always Be My Baby," will be appearing on "Crossing Over with John Edward" on Friday, November 21st at 2:00 pm on UPN Channel 9, here in NYC. "Crossing Over" is a nationally syndicated program, so air-times are different in different parts of the country. Mr. Edwards came to the opening night of "LISTEN TO MY HEART" and was so taken by a few of the songs, he invited David and Allison to appear on his show as guests.

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available.

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ )? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

CHANGES ON REVIEWS

In order to keep the newsletter shorter - and my job a bit easier - I will be posting reviews on the website, rather than including them here. However, I will also make it possible for those who are interested to receive the reviews by e-mail as they are written and posted. Starting after Thanksgiving, new reviews will be written as soon as possible after the show seen, and posted on the website. A copy of the review - in PDF format - will e-mailed to those requesting this service. As soon as I set up the mechanics of it all, I will let you know how to subscribe to this special service. Any reviews from other areas of the country will be treated this way as well - posted on the website, listed in the "WHAT'S NEW" page and e-mailed to those subscribing to REVIEWS.

IT'S TIME TO GO

I had a big surprise when I got home last night - an e-mail from my good friend and former boss from cabaret.org in Fullerton, CA, Doug Simao, who is making a last-minute business trip to NYC. We will be getting together later tonight (he has theater tickets for earlier in the evening). It has been nearly three years since we had a chance to get together, so this will be a really great event for me. Interestingly, I am planning to visit California in December, and we were planning to get together then. I have not finalized my entire trip yet, but right now it looks like I will be in San Francisco on the 7th, 8th & 9th of December, with a one-night visit to the Los Angeles are either on the 6th or the 10th. As soon as all my hotel and air arrangements are made I'll give you all my itinerary. I figured it is about time I see my West Coast friends again, see some cabaret out there - and use up some of my frequent flier miles. Stay tuned.

Before Doug & I get together I will be at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/) at 6:00 pm for Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX (guest is Adam Pascal) and then after dinner at THE CHALKS at 9:00 pm, also at DON'T TELL MAMA. I hope all my readers, wherever you live, will try to attend a cabaret show or other live entertainment event this week.

Thanks once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these past weeks. We are now listing almost 350 members, as we make our way the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Watch for a big announcement about another new benefit for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE after Thanksgiving. I think all members - and performers - will be pleased.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
