CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031108 - Wednesday, November 26, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the MIDWEEK Issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes news, breaking stories and
notes, and news on shows offering discounts to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE.
I am sending
out this issue a day earlier than usual, since tomorrow is Thanksgiving
day here in the US. Tomorrow we will be sending out a brief, special
Thanksgiving issue - we have a lot of folks to thank this year! Tomorrow
I plan to also be glued to my TV watching the annual MACY'S THANKSGIVING
PARADE, before heading into Manhattan for Thanksgiving dinner. On
Wednesday night they light the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and
from then through December 25th the city will be alive with shoppers
and celebrators - and traffic will be in gridlock all over town. Thnaks
to the fantastic subway system I'll be able to attend all the shows
on my schedule without too much difficulty.
December
is just around the corner, and this year I promise myself a tree -
not a real one, but at least a tree to decorate. Our livingroom window
here in Long Island City overlooks a small playground and park so
can be seen from a block away or more. I will try to move my webcam
- which you can check out on the website - to the living room and
focus on the tree. Else, I'll get a second mini-tree to set next to
my computer.
But most
fun will be all the holiday-themed shows I will be able to attend
- there is a list of NYC and non-NYC holiday events at the top of
the BREAKING NEWS page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - with
more being added each day. And this year I will be able to listen
to all those holiday CDs I have stacked next to my computer and listed
on the special HOLIDAY CABARET CD page on the website, thanks to a
great CD player I received from my sister in Florida.
Happy holidays
to all!
SOME THOUGHTS TO SHARE
Continuing
our comparison of cabaret to Broadway theater, as a self-producer
of your cabaret show (in most cases) you are also responsible for
most of the advertising and promotion costs for your event. The same
is true on Broadway. The theaters that rent out their space for a
Broadway show do not contribute to the advertising costs - unless
they have joined the team as co-producers. Only the very large cabaret
rooms here in NYC (Feinstein's, Cafe Carlyle, Algonquin) advertise
- and they advertise usually in just one place: The New York Times.
I do not know if they charge-back some of this cost to the performer.
But these large clubs are actually co-producers of sorts, with a vested
interest in the performer, who is usually signed with a pay guarantee.
But you might be surprised to learn that in order to play these rooms,
the performer often must also make a guarantee of sorts - that a certain
number of cover charges will be sold, or else their pay will be reduced
accordingly. For that reason, many of these larger clubs sign a performer
through a major record label - the company guaranteeing to purchase
the required number of seats each performance. Then the record company
takes on the advertising and promotion costs, subsidizing the show.
That is one of the reasons that the larger rooms often book CD-release
related shows.
So, of there
is no money to be made in cabaret, why bother? There are a number
of performers who have actually reached that decision, and I fully
understand their position. But, looking closely, Broadway and off-Broadway
shows lose money far more often than not. Other forms of live entertainment
do not fare much better - opera, ballet, jazz, etc. Yet the shows
go on and on, subsidized by corporations, record labels, wealthy patrons,
federal, state and local governments, and even the performers themselves.
And in cabaret, as in other art forms, there are those cabaret shows
that do become commercially successful - Our Sinatra, Forever Plaid,
Nunsense and Forbidden Broadway come to mind. And many performers
who make their start in cabaret go on to become very successful in
other entertainment fields - Bette Midler, Carol Burnett and Barbra
Streisand immediately come to mind.
But I feel
cabaret isn't about the money. Its about a special experience and
that mutual communication between audience and performer. There is
a certain reaction in the heart and spirit that occurs with the cabaret
show acting as a catalyst. The best cabaret shows are those written
and developed without money in mind. You and I have seen many of those
slickly written shows, developed to appeal to all audiences, with
interchangeable parts played by interchangeable performers - Our Sinatra,
Forever Plaid, Nunsense, Forbidden Broadway come to mind. True cabaret
shows get folded up and put away at the end of the run - perhaps to
be recorded some time as a CD, and perhaps brought out and revived
after a few years. But the treasure is in the performance and the
experience, not in the cash register. They are subsidized by a day
job, a loving partner, dear friends, those CD sales and by that cruise
ship or country club gig.
Now on with
the news:

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR
MORE NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available.

How do you
get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
)? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving
the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret
related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please
send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going
out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and
often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually
trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before
using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count
them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
TICKETS PURCHASES, RESERVATIONS
MADE - CALIFORNIA HERE I COME!
All the arrangements
are made and confirmed and I can't wait to fly off to San Francisco
on Sunday, December 7th for a quick 3-night visit. I selected these
dates because it will allow me to see three cabaret events and a bunch
of San Francisco talent. I will be leaving early on Sunday morning,
arriving in the San Francisco just after noon. I plan to write the
MONDAY December 7th issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in flight and
e-mail it when I arrive at my hotel.
On Sunday
night, December 7th, I will attend Bruce E. Phillips' San Francisco
version of TEDDYCARE 2003 to benefit SHANTI, Arts Access, Bay Area
Crisis Nursery and SF General Hospital. Admission is $15 plus a Teddy
Bear (new) at THE PLUSH ROOM at the York Hotel (940 Sutter Street,
San Francisco, CA - 415-885-2800 - http://www.plushroom.com/)
at 7:00 pm. Darlene Popovic is host, with Houston Allred, Bill Cooper,
Coley Grundman, John McCullough, Tammy Nelson, Richard Nickol and
Bruce E. Phillips.
On Monday
night, the 8th, I will attend Shaynee Rainbolt' Holiday Madness show,
also at THE PLUSH ROOM at 8:00 pm. She will be backed by Ken Muir
on piano and Al Obidinski on bass.
Finally,
on Tuesday night, the 9th, I will be back at THE PLUSH ROOM for the
opening night of Wesla Whitfield's new show "Why ShouldnÍt I Æ Songs
I Always Wanted To Sing" with Mike Greensill.
While in
San Francisco, I will be staying at THE YORK HOTEL (940 Sutter Street,
San Francisco - Phone # 415-885-6800 or 800-808-9675), just upstairs
of THE PLUSH ROOM. I return to the airport for a 9:15 am flight back
to NYC. My original plan was to make a stop in Los Angeles wither
on the 6th or the 10th, but in refiguring the finances involved, I
decided to postpone that segment, and make a special two or three
night trip to LA early in 2004 if funds are available.
IT'S TIME TO GO
I want to
send out this issue early today, since many folks receive their copies
at work, and if experience serves from my pre-retirement days, many
workplaces will be closing early today. Happy Thanksgiving to all
- I'll be at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com)
for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow afternoon - call them if you want
to join me, since there are a few spaces left and the price is ideal.
Tonight I
will be at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmama.com/)
at 6:30 pm to catch "LORELEI in WaterSigns" featuring Gina Carleton,
Lorinne Lampert and Missy Schwartz, and then I will be racing to The
Backroom at DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) to
catch Judy Barnett's show at 8:00 pm - that's an 8-block race. I hope
everyone reading this newsletter will try to attend a live entertainment
event - hopefully cabaret - this week.
Thanks once
more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these
past weeks. We are now listing over 350 members, as we make our way
the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Watch for a
big announcement about another new benefit for members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE after Thanksgiving. I think all members - and performers
- will be pleased.
And that
is just about the way it was.
