Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is a MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret listings for around the world, and also includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. The MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays, includes more news, breaking stories and notes, news on shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

Greetings from San Francisco. We have had two days of glorious weather, with a cloudy day today and some rain in the forecast. I managed to "escape from New York" after a blizzard that left a foot of snow in Long Island City and about the same in Manhattan, most of it falling on Friday night and during the day on Saturday. By early Sunday, when we left for the airport, the snow had stopped and the sky was blue. Our 9:20 am flight was delayed for nearly an hour while the plane was de-iced, and arrived in San Francisco at 1:45 pm, about an hour late.

This issue is going out on Tuesday instead of Monday due to the fact that I was unable to get "online" until Monday morning because I forgot to take along an important cable to connect my laptop iMac to the data port in my room here at THE YORK HOTEL, home of THE PLUSH ROOM (940 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-885-2800 - http://www.plushroom.com/). I had to wait until Monday morning to connect to the internet, and there were over 600 pieces of mail to check when I went online at 10:00 am! Being off the internet on Sunday made it impossible for me to gather club schedules for the listings in this issue.

We got to the hotel around 3:00 pm, too late to catch Craig Rubano's show that had just started. After checking in, we took a brief tour of the area, had dinner, and at 7:00 were back at THE PLUSH ROOM for the San Francisco version of TeddyCare, produced by Bruce Phillips and hosted by Darlene Popovic. It was a fantastic show, featuring some of the best talent in the area - many folks I had not seen in performance before. I timed the trip in order to see as many San Francisco performers as possible, and to meet as many CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE readers as possible. Note to all: the drinks at THE PLUSH ROOM are perfection - take it from an expert.

After the show we joined the group headed to MARTUNI'S (4 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-241-0205) where cabaret folks and others seem to gather seven nights a week for open-mike until midnight. Jeffrey Chin was at the piano, and singer after singer took the mike to entertain. Several performers arrived with Bruce Phillips from the TeddyCare show, including the fabulous Tammy Nelson - a cast member of "Beach Blanket Babylon," which has been playing here for many years. At midnight I realized we had not had dinner and headed back to the hotel by cab - searching for a restaurant along the way. No luck, but when we arrived back at the hotel, Craig Rubano was just arriving as well, and he had a menu in his room for a 24-hour diner called SPARKEY'S (242 Church Street, SF) that delivered. So at around 1:00 am I was feasting on a club sandwich.

Yesterday, after an early morning trek to RADIO SHACK and returning to the hotel and downloading my e-mail, we took a "walking tour" of San Francisco, starting from the hotel at 11:00 am, touring the shopping district around Union Square, a walk through Chinatown, through the "Little Italy" section of the city (North Beach), ending at Fisherman's Wharf for lunch - crab cakes, clam chowder, Pacific Red Snapper, shrimp - the works! We toured "The Cannery" shopping area, and finally ended up on the cable car for the ride back to Sutter Street and short walk back to the hotel.

After checking my e-mail and working for a while on this newsletter, we were back downstairs for cocktails, and Shaynee Rainbolt's Holiday Madness show in THE PLUSH ROOM. What fun! Big surprise was meeting Mychelle Colleary before the show. Mychelle moved to NYC from SF about a year ago, and was back in town for a visit - she will be appearing in next Sunday's TeddyCare show, as well as at KELLY'S OF ALAMEDA (1313 Park Street, Alameda, CA - 510-769-1011) on Saturday night.

After the show it was back to MARTUNI'S - this time with transportation provided by Mychelle. It was another great song-fest, with Tim Hockenberry at the piano. Mychelle mentioned that she had missed dinner, and we realized that we had not eaten as well, so around 11:30 pm we headed to one of her favorite haunts, MEL'S DINER (2165 Lombard Street, SF). On the way, we took a "motor tour" of area of the city we had missed, including the Castro area, Russian Hill, Pacific Heights and more, including that part of Lombard Street that zig-zags (world's crookedest street). Shaynee joined us at the diner for a great feast of burgers, chilli fries and cokes. We helped close the place at 1:00 am.

I took a break from writing for lunch around 12:30 and now I'm back. After I send off this newsletter (hopefully by 3:30 California time) I want to do some shopping, and then attend the opening night of Wesla Whitfield's new show - again downstairs in THE PLUSH ROOM at 8:00 pm. I head for the airport at 7:30 am tomorrow morning, so I doubt there will be any late-night activities today, but who knows?

One other item of note - on Friday night, the 5th of December, after helping John McMahon celebrate his birthday (which was really on the 3rd), while walking to the bus home, I took a rather nasty spill on a slippery sidewalk (we had snow and sleet all day). No broken bones, but I hit the ground on my right shoulder and spent the night in quite a bit of pain. I could do very little computer work on Saturday - I kept close to home - and found sleep difficult on Saturday night as well. This morning I was finally able to lift my arm above my head without too much pain so things are healing on schedule. So, I'm sorry that except for changing banners and some touchups, I haven't been able to get any new items posted. So when I return I will again be playing "catch up" once more.

But fortunately, my assistant Dennis, who has been doing such a great job helping me keep caught up with my office work, scanning photos, testing links, recording CDs for my iPod, joined me on this trip - and what a help, since with one "wing" barely usable, he handled my luggage, helped me in an out of cabs, and even assisted in getting my coat on and off (try doing that with one arm hanging sort of limply at your side, and you will see what I mean).

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available. I have news ready to print about two new cabaret venues - already in operation - but one contains no reservation phone number or cover information, and the other did not include the exact street address.

IT'S TIME TO GO

Tomorrow morning Dennis & I return to NYC and that big pile of snow that we escaped on Sunday night. I apologize for the brevity of this issue - I shall be covering more items in the MID-WEEK issue - which will be published on Friday, December 12th. I'll have more San Francisco stories to tell as well.

Thanks once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these past weeks. We are now listing over 350 members, as we make our way the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Of course it would be great if we could reach an even higher number, but we have many more months to go before the next membership year.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
