CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #031204 - Friday, December 12, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MIDWEEK Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes news, breaking stories and notes, and news on shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. This issue is published normally on Thursdays.

I'm back - recharged! The trip to San Francisco was just what I needed to wake up out of my "pre-winter doldrums." In fact, the opportunity to escape the aftermath of the 12-inch snowstorm that hit the NYC area the day before we left was an unexpected blessing. We returned to JFK airport on Wednesday afternoon to discover 50-degree temperatures, and much of the snow melted. There were no huge slush puddles to slog through and no more icy sidewalks. And what was left on the ground was almost totally washed away by a heavy rainstorm on Thursday.

To pick up where I left off in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE issue that went out on Tuesday, Dennis went off Tuesday morning to purchase some souvenirs for the folks back home. I completed most of the newsletter and met him for lunch at CRACKER'S, just over the hill from the hotel. We returned to the room and I completed and e-mailed the issue. Our plan was to go shopping a bit more, but a heavy rainfall had developed, so I worked more on the computer - updating my expense records, etc., while he watched some San Francisco TV.

At 6:30 pm we headed to the bar in the YORK HOTEL lobby, where we were scheduled to share a drink with Shaynee Rainbolt, whose show we had seen the previous evening. She joined us and we shared tales and a bit of news about cabaret, both in NYC and SF. Shaynee has decided to move to NYC in 2004. The 8:00 pm show, with Wesla Whitfield and Mike Greensill, was sold out so we moved to the cabaret room around 7:40 and took our seats. PLUSH ROOM manager Deanna Gogol had thoughtfully reserved a table for us once more - we sat in the same space all three nights - and by this time she was aware of our drink choices and a water soon arrived with our drinks. They do things quietly but in style here.

A word about THE PLUSH ROOM itself is in order. It is without a doubt the most beautiful cabaret space I have ever visited. There are good sight lines all around, there is a fairly large stage area, terrific lighting and sound equipment, and comfortable seating, with both tables and banquettes. Now, many other rooms can boast these attributes. But it is the ceiling - stained glass, covering nearly the entire room - that sets this place apart from the others, and makes it so special. Before and after the show, it is lighted from above - positively awesome. And it is the ceiling that will mean the room will close for renovation in early 2004. You see, the hotel has recently been taken over by new owners, and whenever that takes place in San Francisco, a thorough inspection is made to be sure the building is up to the latest building codes - this is earthquake country. It was determined that the ceiling needed some reinforcement. But, happily, when completed, the room will be completely restored to its current beauty - all the changes will be invisible.

If the way I was treated by the new management and the staff at the YORK HOTEL is any indication, their love and dedication to THE PLUSH ROOM and cabaret is total and unwavering. In fact, I was told that the new owners want to increase the visibility of THE PLUSH ROOM as a focal point for entertainment and nightlife in the San Francisco area. The bar just off the lobby is now open several more hours each night, and late night, live entertainment is now in place in THE PLUSH ROOM several nights a week.

A word about Wesla Whitfield and her new show - scheduled to run through January 11, 2004: If you are in the San Francisco area between now and January 11th, do not fail to see this show. The lady is incredible - such songs, such vocals, such phrasing, such "gentle charisma!" And Mr. Greensill's arrangements are "invisibly" incredible. What a great way to end my visit! I was totally, completely and eternally captivated by this show. Lyrics of songs I have heard dozens of times suddenly were made clear. Tunes as old as myself were made new and exciting. I am tempted to book another round-trip ticket to SF just to see this show once more.

After the show, the thrill and excitement (and late-nights and those many hills) of the three days finally caught up with us. In fact Dennis made a bee-line for our room as soon as the lights came up, while I stayed in the lobby to make our good-byes to the many friends we met and made who were at the show. When I got to the room he was already fast asleep. Good idea, since the van to the airport would be arriving at 6:15 the next morning, and it was already midnight. As it was, we were both awake at 5:00 am.

The ride to the airport was quick, giving us nearly two hours to fill before flight time. But it gave us both a time to reflect, share and compare impressions of our visit. We both decided that we would return to this great town, to our new-found and old-found friends here, and the friendship, kindness and refreshing helpfulness of the people of San Francisco.

Our flight home was quick as well - we arrived nearly an hour early at JFK. In fact, it took 4 hours and 38 minutes to reach NYC - and it took me exactly 4 hours to get from the airport to home: a bus to Manhattan in rush hour traffic, plus two subways and a bus (including a brief stop at McDonalds for dinner).

Its great to be back - and I am so very happy I made the trip. A big thank you to my former employers, the folks at CABARET.ORG, Doug Simao and Kate Peters, for their very special donation received just before I left to San Francisco. The trip was expensive, but their gift allowed my to relax, have a good time, and even afford to treat a few good friends to late-night burgers and chilli fries at MEL'S DINER without feeling guilty!

SOME THOUGHTS TO SHARE

We are quickly approaching the "Cabaret Award Season" - that time when publications, critics, reviewers and others list their favorite cabaret shows of the year. David Hurst of SHOW BUSINESS WEEKLY has already published his list - with the year not even ended. Here in NYC there are three award shows. On the 12th of January the Siegels produce their Nightlife Awards show, encompassing Jazz and Comedy as well as cabaret. I'm not sure if there will be any BACK STAGE Bistro Awards show this year, but applications are already being accepted for the MAC Awards with their gala to be presented in April.

Here at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE I have opted to list my 20 or so favorite shows seen in the year. It is impossible for me to see every show presented (see last week's article listing 17 cabaret-producing venues here in NYC alone), so I can't claim that my list includes the very best of cabaret. And in fact, there is no way to check wether any awards presented by any entity really includes all the very best shows.

For example, the BACK STAGE Bistro award has a rule that prevents any single performer from receiving an award in a category where that person has already received one in a previous year. This means that, even if you presented a fantastic show - the best of your career - you may be ineligible of you already received a Bistro award. Plus, the awardees are chosen by just the two BACK STAGE reviewers, who obviously have not seen every cabaret show in 2003.

The NIGHTLIFE awards attempt to avoid the shortcomings of the BACK STAGE setup (the Siegels were formerly reviewers for BACK STAGE) by including a larger number of judges - 20 or so - to make their choices. Unfortunately, these 20 are asked to cover jazz and comedy performances as well as cabaret, covering perhaps 70 to 100 or more venues, if you tally up all the nightspots offering live performances. Only a portion of these judges cover cabaret, and only a few of these cover the wide breadth of cabaret offerings in NYC, concentrating mainly on performers in the very posh, high-priced cabaret venues.

The MAC Awards take a different approach. Anyone meeting the eligibility rules may nominate themselves for an award in about 20 categories. These preliminary nominees are presented to the MAC membership (currently around 900) and the top 3 or 4 chosen as a result of that first ballot, are re-presented to the membership for a final vote. Now it would be wonderful if all 900 members attended every cabaret show presented in a given year - performers might actually be able to make money on their shows - even at the MAC discounted cover charges. But if you ask around, or look around (as I do) you will soon discover only a small percentage of MAC members attend more than one show a month - if that. And I have been told by those in the know that less than one-third of the members actually take the time to vote. Most voting is based on a personal relationship with the nominee, word of mouth, or on the basis of a review read (probably in that order).

Personally, I feel that the cabaret award system, whatever the method, does as much harm to cabaret here in NYC as it does good. It creates a spirit of competition that should lead to better cabaret, and sometimes does. But it also many times goes against the spirit of cabaret - many shows seem to be created to win an award rather than entertain. Vocalists often chose their song list to enable themselves to compete in the R&B or jazz categories, where competition is less, rather than songs better suited to their personal style and vocal talent. Some performers attend shows to scope out the competition, rather than support a fellow artist.

In fact, when I visit cities around the country, I find that the lack of award systems seems to create a spirit of camaraderie rather than animosity. Performers are less likely to produce "formula" shows designed to please the critics and judges, and audience members seem to enjoy each show on the basis of its own merits, rather than if it was better or worse than someone else's show.

The value of an award? Well, it makes for a great line on your press release and on your promotional fliers and cards. It helps you get those out-of-town bookings, where a venue manager might not be familiar with your actual work. But always remember that, in truth, a cabaret award should be the result of your ability to create and produce a show that is both entertaining and reflective of yourself, your talents, your personality. It should never be the reason for producing your show.

Never won an award? Well, just mull over the fact that a MAC Award was recently spotted on a table at the Broadway Cares Flea Market on Shubert Alley. I hear is was purchased for 50 cents.

Next MID-WEEK issue we'll discuss reviewers and reviews.

Now on with the news:

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS

I get plenty of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE

Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ).

How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ )? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

IT'S TIME TO GO

It has been an exciting week thus far - and there are still a few days left. Last night I was at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/) for their First Annual Staff Holiday Party, a benefit for the LETTERS TO SANTA drive, featuring the folks who serve and bartend at the club. Not only a great show for a great cause, but also a great way for me to see and hear several new performers. Tonight I am back to MAMA ROSE'S at 7:00 pm to catch Carol Savvas' show at 7:00 pm. Saturday night I will take a night off, in preparation for a very, very busy Sunday.

Sunday at 2:00 pm I am at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com) for brunch and the Annual Holiday Toons show, with Mary Foster Conklin, Phyllis Pastore and John McMahon. At 5:30 pm I plan to catch Marilyn Bettinger's show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/). Then at 7:00 pm its the fabulous Joni Rapp at DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) and then I rush over to ST. CLEMENTS THEATER (423 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-246-7277 Ext. 29) for the last half of Carolyn Montgomery's show/CD release party that starts at 8:00 pm. If I have the strength - and the time - I hope to get downtown to MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/) at 9:30 pm for Stephano & Band. Paramedics will be standing by at the last two locations. Note to Stephano: please don't hold the show for me - if Carolyn has those cheese puffs at her CD release party I will not be headed south for your show - or any show!

Now for a nap and then back to my cabaret-filled life.

Thanks once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these past weeks. We are now listing over 350 members, as we make our way the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Watch for a big announcement about another new benefit for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE after Thanksgiving. I think all members - and performers - will be pleased.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
