CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031205 - Monday, December 15, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret
listings for around the world, and also includes information on all
the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. The
MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays, includes more news, breaking
stories and notes, news on shows offering discounts to members of
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
The NYC area
has had the weirdest weather since I returned from San Francisco on
Wednesday, the 10th. First rain when we arrived, then warm days, then
on Saturday and Sunday a lot of snow changing to heavy rain on Sunday
night, and today sunny but very windy.
Due to the
San Francisco trip, I am about a week behind in posting news to the
BREAKING NEWS pages, so the next few days I will be playing "catch
up" some more. At the same time, I have been receiving more press
releases, news items and word of shows offering discounts to members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. I will have a complete list in the MID-WEEK
issue, as is my custom, but look over the listings below to catch
some new ones added over the weekend. I will update the MEMBER DEALS
page with all these items as soon as this issue goes out.
ABOUT BANNERS (and advertising/promotion
in general)
I do not
guarantee that you will sell more covers for your show, or sell more
CDs, if you advertise on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE with a banner ad.
But I do guarantee that your name, your show or your CD will be seen
hundreds and even thousands of times a day by people all over the
world. One advertiser informed me that his website hits were up dramatically
as soon as his banner began running, and sales of his new CD took
off amazingly at the same time. But he is a well known performer who
had not released a CD for some time - the banner ad served to notify
his fans that the new CD they were waiting for was finally available.
He was promoting an "established brand name."
Just about
every day I walk through TIMES SQUARE and am surrounded by giant,
multicolored advertising signs. They advertise a lot of things that
I would never buy, but I remember the signs - I remember the "brand
name." And every performer must establish a "brand name" in order
to build a following. That means keeping your "brand name" before
the public as often as you can. Here at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE I offer
many ways you can promote yourself - even if you don't have a show
currently running or a CD currently for sale. The MESSAGE BOARD, for
example, is there for everyone to use - just use it wisely and in
moderation (there are a few serial posters who are really doing more
damage to their "brand name" than good).
The BREAKING
NEWS section is always in need of articles, especially from areas
outside of NYC. Remember, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is seen and read
by cabaret lovers all over the world - including booking managers,
agents, critics, reviewers, writers, editors, and other cabaret performers.
Over 60 folks subscribe to the newsletter in Australia, and more than
20 in the UK. I have readers/subscribers in nearly every state in
the USA, including Hawaii and Alaska. These subscribers also regularly
visit the website.
A link for
performers to their webpages is available for all - you need to be
a subscriber and must have a website - just check the "Other Links"
pages to see if you are already listed. Members of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE get an additional place to put their links. Folks searching
for your name on the internet have one additional place to find you!
I constantly
look for more ways for you to establish and maintain your "brand name"
through the website and the newsletter. The more than 350 members
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE have joined not merely to get a discount
to cabaret shows. They have joined, for the most part, because this
publication and website were created to spread the word of cabaret
all over the world - free of charge! Take advantage of their donations
by making CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE one of the tools you can use to advance
your cabaret career - to keep your "brand name" before the cabaret
community worldwide.

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR
MORE NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available. I have news ready
to print about two new cabaret venues - already in operation - but
one contains no reservation phone number or cover information, and
the other did not include the exact street address.
A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER:
Each weekly issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes
a rundown of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these
items will be repeated as long as the banner is running.

IT'S TIME TO GO
It is nearly
3:00 pm and I have a lot of web work to do - and need to whip the
membership e-mail list together for a special mailing with a great
announcement for all current members.
Tonight I
am off to MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/)
for Scott Coulter & Lennie Watts' Holiday show at 7:00 pm. Tomorrow
I am going to a private Christmas party that a good friend of mine
throws each year - and I have to get to a store to buy a gift before
the event. Wednesday night I am at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th
Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
for Tanya Moberly's show (a rare event that I don't want to miss)
and then I hope to finally get to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher
Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/)
for the last of Darius Frowner's Holiday shows at 9:00 pm.
Just a reminder:
There are a lot of benefit shows in December all over the place, but
there is a special one I want to plug one more time in this issue.
Its called "Christmas Carolyn," hosted by Carolyn Montgomery and benefitting
the ST. CLEMENTS CHURCH's Community Outreach Programs (After School
Program, Food Pantry and Free Veterinary Clinic) at ST. CLEMENTS THEATER
(423 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-246-7277 Ext. 29) on Sunday, December
21st at 8:00 pm. A list of performers can be found above. I used to
live just down the block from this church, and their kindness and
support of folks in the area - especially the less fortunate - is
legend. Plus, they are "cabaret friendly," opening their doors to
cabaret shows and events. If you cannot attend the benefit (this is
really a busy time of year for all) you can send your tax-deductible
donation directly to the address above, noting that your gift is to
benefit the Community Outreach programs and "Christmas Carolyn."
Thanks once
more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these
past weeks. We are now listing over 350 members, as we make our way
the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Of course it
would be great if we could reach an even higher number, but we have
many more months to go before the next membership year.
And that
is just about the way it was.
