CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031206 - Thursday, December 18, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the MIDWEEK Issue
of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes news, breaking stories and
notes, and news on shows offering discounts to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE.
Exactly one
week from now is Christmas Day - Thursday, December 25th. Since we
usually publish our MID-WEEK issue on Thursdays, there will only be
one issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE per week for the next two weeks
- the MONDAY issue. These combined issues will consist of mainly listings,
including shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
usually found in the MID-WEEK issue.
Meantime,
I am having great fun with my iPod. I have already loaded about 25
cabaret CDs to the gadget, and now I can listen to CDs without interruption
while I travel the subway, the bus or simply walking down the street.
Up to now I have had to "sample" CDs between phone calls, while answering
e-mails, and while working at my computer. The difference in the listening
experience is amazing.
I have already
discovered that there are some CDs out there that are fantastic -
and some that are dreadful. I really need to get to work and start
posting mini-reviews of these little discs on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)!
But to all who are contemplating making a cabaret CD in the near future:
take your time, work closely with your arranger/musical director,
and spend some extra money to make it the best you can. Even if this
means a delay of several months, it is far better than making a sloppy
record of your work. A good help is to check the credits on CDs you
really like and go from there.
Sue Matsuki
made up a "fact sheet" on producing your own CD which she has generously
given me permission to post on the website in my TIPS & FAQs section
and after listening to the 2-dozen CDs on my iPod, I want to get that
article up as soon as possible.
This is a
shorter issue than usual, due to time constraints. The promised next
installment of my THOUGHTS TO SHARE series, regarding critics and
reviews will appear in the January 8 MID-WEEK issue.
Now on with
the news:

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR
MORE NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information
about other shows around the country and around the world can be found
on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have
enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss
out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews
from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website
or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs.
IT'S TIME TO GO
This week
we are working to prepare the "official" membership cards for all
members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. We rushed out "temporary" cards
earlier this membership year so that performers could begin to immediately
offer discounts to our supporters. The new cards will include the
member's name, as well as an expiration date. They will be mailed
early next week - the mail will be very slow between now and the 25th,
so I am taking advantage of the lull between Christmas and New Years
- before all those end-of-month bills are sent to everyone from the
department stores and credit card companies. This has meant the purchase
of some new software, and will involve a lot of "hand labor" to make
sure the proper card is in the proper envelope.
At the same
time, I am working on getting a whole bunch of articles posted in
the BREAKING NEWS section - hopefully they will be up and running
later today or tomorrow morning.
Tonight I
am off to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmama.com/)
at 6:00 pm for Seth Rudetsky's Broadway Chatterbox, and then to DILLON'S
(245 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-307-9797) at 8:00 pm for the Boulevard
East vocal trio's Holiday show. DILLON'S just installed a brand new
sound system (designed by Damien - the same fellow who designed the
fantastic sound setup at MAMA ROSE'S). The difference is amazing,
and congratulations to Scott Barbarino and the owners of DILLON'S
for the wonderful upgrades to this room in the past few months - new
piano, new stage setting and now a new sound system. New lighting
is in the planning stage.
Tomorrow
night I will be at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558
- http://www.mamaroses.net/)
at 7:00 pm for Anthony Santelmo's Holiday show, and then will rush
up to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmama.com/)
for Michael Conley's show at 8:30 pm (that's a rush, since Anthony's
shows usually run a little overtime).
I hope many
of you will join me on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT
ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/)
for Lynne Jackson & Mike Palter's CD release show. I have never heard
them perform, but they are legends in the Boston area and have performed
all over the world, but rarely in NYC. I can't wait! This is a one-time-only
event.
Sunday night
at 9:30 pm, Ross James, a cabaret/theater star in Australia, will
make his New York City debut at MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC
- 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/).
This too is a one-time-only event, and from word we've received from
folks down under, this lad's show is not to be missed. I hope you
will join me there as well and give Ross a real New York welcome.
Thanks once
more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations these
past weeks. We are now listing over 350 members, as we make our way
the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004. Watch for a
big announcement about another new benefit for members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE after Thanksgiving. I think all members - and performers
- will be pleased.
And that
is just about the way it was.
