CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE #031207 - Monday, December 22, 2003
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News
If it's anything
to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is a MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes cabaret
listings for around the world, and also includes information on all
the banner ads running on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. The
MID-WEEK issue, normally sent on Thursdays, includes more news, breaking
stories and notes, news on shows offering discounts to members of
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. There will be no MID-WEEK issue this week,
so items usually found there will be included in this issue.
Things are
sort of slowing down as Christmas approaches. Thanks to all who have
been sending me the Holiday cards - I have been trying to figure out
how to share them with you all this year. Later today I will be adding
a few more holiday decorations to the website, and if I can get my
webcam working properly I will set up a small display of the cards
for you all to see.
I thoroughly
enjoyed the vocal group Boulevard East's (Beth Covell, Christopher
Howatt & Dana Merritt) Holiday show at DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street,
NYC - 212-307-9797) last Thursday night, made especially enjoyable
by the new sound system there. New lighting is being set up as well,
since "Boobs, the Musical" has opened there for an extended run. On
Friday, I was downtown for Anthony Santelmo's Holiday show, with Nan
Butcher at the piano, and Valarie diLorenzo, Margaret Kelly & Julie
Reyburn singing backup. Mr. Santelmo is an ultimate entertainer.
After the
show we headed uptown to REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091
- http://www.RegentsClub.com)
for dinner and a bit of piano bar before heading home. Manager Kelly
Briggs has wine-tasting parties here once a month and before we left
he shared with us some fantastic white wine from Argentina he had
discovered - delicious! The food was great too - and the desserts
(especially the peach tart and the cheese cake) were heavenly. The
nice thing about making this a "last stop" before heading home is
that it is just a few blocks from the start of a bus line that takes
me a few yards from my front door!
Saturday
I took the night off, but Sunday I went into Manhattan to catch Lynne
Jackson and Mike Palter's CD release show at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM
(342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/).
Lynne & Mike last did a show in NYC over 12 years ago, so this was
a special treat. I have made attempts to see this delightful duo several
times in New England, but always was thwarted by transportation problems
(as you know, I don't own a car - or a driver's license, for that
matter). Unfortunately, I could not stay for the full 90 minute show,
since it started nearly a half-hour late, and I had another appointment
at 4:00 pm to do some shopping with a friend, so I had to slip out
early.
Sunday night
I was downtown once more at 9:30 pm to see Australian Ross James at
MAMA ROSE'S (219 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/).
It was refreshing to see a young Australian singer who looked well
fed for a change! Mr. James has wonderful vocals, and his show included
some new songs, as well as new looks at some cabaret standards. Unfortunately,
he was appearing for one night only - hopefully he will be able to
make a return soon so that more cabaret lovers will have a chance
to hear him.
CABARET IN MY POCKET
Meantime,
I have uploaded more CDs to my cute little iPod - it goes with me
wherever I go, and I am hearing those cabaret CDs without interruption
as I make my travels from home to Manhattan, between shows, and while
shopping. What an amazing way to listen to music! Of the CDs heard,
here are some of my favorites so far (alphabetical by song title):
Nathan Martin's
ANYWHERE WITH YOU - delightful fun, cleverly done!
The Kitchenette's DINING AT THE BANQUET - a feast of delicious vocals!
Marieann Meringolo's IMAGINE - you simply must hear the heavenly vocals!
Jane Schecter's IN TIMES LIKE THESE - amazing voice, and great song
choices!
Linda Kosut's LIFE IS BUT A DREAM - the lady is incredible, the CD
a gem!
Joanne Tatham's MAKING LIGHT - one of the finest CDs in my collection!
Pam Tate's SOMETHING WONDERFUL - the title describes this CD to a
"t"!
Maria Gentile's THAT ... WHICH IS REAL - a treasure trove of original
songs!
Barb Jungr's WATERLOO SUNSET - best female vocal CD currently on the
iPod!
Tom Andersen's WHO KNOWS? - best male vocal CD currently on the iPod!
I hope to
write a longer item on each on the website soon, but if you are CD
shopping for the holidays, the above list is a good start. More in
the next issue.

NEW YEAR'S EVE SHOW? LET
ME KNOW ABOUT IT!
I will also
soon set up a special section to the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
(http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/)
listing NEW YEAR'S EVE cabaret shows and events around the country.
Send in your listing - but please include complete information and
do not simply send me a copy of your flier or show card.
I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR
MORE NEWS
I get plenty
of show listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is
really difficult trying to choose which ones to run, which ones to
set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete
information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful
to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially
NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations,
new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available. I have news ready
to print about two new cabaret venues - already in operation - but
one contains no reservation phone number or cover information, and
the other did not include the exact street address.
A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER:
Each weekly issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes
a rundown of all the banner advertisers on the website - and these
items will be repeated as long as the banner is running.

IT'S TIME TO GO
Tonight I
am going to finally get to see D. Jay Bradley's Christmas show at
DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/)
at 6:30 pm - my San Francisco trip and a few other date conflicts
made it impossible to get to see my favorite annual show until tonight
- the last show of the series! I usually see this show three or four
times each year.
I am planning
a very quiet Christmas eve and day. Most of the cabaret clubs are
closed on the 25th, and some are even closed on the 24th to allow
their staff members to celebrate the holiday with family. I'll probably
be at REGENTS (317 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-593-3091 - http://www.RegentsClub.com/)
for Christmas Day dinner - if it is anything like the Thanksgiving
feast I had there, it should be a real Christmas treat. I hope that
Kelly has some of that great white wine left.
I want to
take this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed holiday season. Thanks
once more to all the folks who sent in their membership donations
these past weeks. We are now listing nearly 375 members, as we make
our way the way towards our goal of 400 members for 2003-2004.
Our next
regular issue will be on Monday, December 29th, and hopefully will
include all the New Year's Eve cabaret events around the world.
And that
is just about the way it was.
