CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #041006 - Thursday, October 21, 2004
Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!

This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes news, breaking stories and notes, news from cabaret-related membership organizations, listings of cabaret-themed benefits, and news on shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, with savings of over $150!
Note that we sent out a special "NYC CABARET WEEK" edition on Sunday the 17th, for those who may be living in or visiting NYC this week and can't afford - or can not longer physically handle - all the daily events at THE TOWN HALL this week (featuring FEINSTEIN'S'S prices but cramped theater seating, no cocktails during the show and long lines for the those few rest rooms at intermission). That set of listings is now available on the website. By the way, discount tickets are available for one or more of THE TOWN HALL shows this week, if you know where to look. Alan Kull will be covering a few nights of the event, and his report will be on the website some time after Monday, October 25th.

NOTES AND THOUGHTS FROM ALL OVER

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE "OFF THE AIR" MOST OF THE MORNING TODAY
Yesterday, the phone line that connects me to the internet (via DSL) went dead - meantime the DSL line continued to operate. Not too much of a problem, since I could still use my cell phone. In fact, I used that phone to call VERIZON repair. This morning they called me (on my cell) to report that they had changed "pairs" (whatever that means) and all would be OK in an hour or so. That was 9:00 am - and at about the same time I lost my DSL connection! So, I have no idea exactly when this issue will actually be sent, but as soon as we get connected, out it goes!

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE PROGRESS REPORT
We're in a "cash crunch" at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Expenses are up about 10% over last year, while banner ad sales and membership donations are down nearly 30% from last year at this time. I could no longer afford to pay my assistant (fortunately, he has found a full time job), and I have had to curtail all out-of-NYC travel since May. I am even beginning to look for a less-expensive apartment and for the first time in four years had to take a cash advance on my credit card to cover expenses. If you have not yet joined as a supporting member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, I really need your help over the next few weeks. Several folks joined or rejoined this past week, but I am hoping that 15 new/renewing members will join as GOLD supporters ($75) or the equivalent (about $1,000) in SILVER memberships ($20) to pay off that cash advance - the interest rate makes me want to cry! Memberships are available for greater amounts as well. For information on becoming a contributing member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, check at http://svhamstra.com/Membership.shtml. You can even make your donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you make your donation by check, please make the check payable simply to Stu Hamstra and send to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.

SHOWS SEEN SINCE LAST WEEK THURSDAY
I was able to catch 9 cabaret shows since last Thursday's issue - although one was a "repeat visit."

Last Thursday night, October 14th, as scheduled, I travelled uptown to LIVE AT OPIA (130 East 57th Street, NYC - 212-688-3939 - http://www.opiarestaurant.com/ ) for Leslie Orofino's show, "Red, Hot & Blues" at 7:00 pm. It was my first visit to OPIA, but I have been a consistent fan of Ms. Orofino. The new show was a perfect showcase of Ms. Orofino's personal wit and charm and delightful vocals. Backed by a terrific band featuring Keith Ingham on piano, Brian Torff on bass and Rex Benincasa on drums, Ms. Orofino never wavered from her goal of giving all an enjoyable, fun-filled evening of song. Her director is Louis D. Pietig. There was a slight problem at the start of the show - there seemed to be a problem with the singer's monitor. But once that was cleared up all went smoothly. Ms. Orofino brings so much fun and joy to her shows, she actually reminded me of shows I saw years ago by one of the "Ladies of Attitude" she saluted, Alberta Hunter, who I saw at the old COOKERY in the Village about 6 times, many years ago. Julie Wilson, Dorothy Fields, Peggy Lee and Mae West were also represented on this list of personalities. This was the last show of the series, but word after the show was that Leslie had been invited back to OPIA later this year.

On Friday, October 15th, I saw two shows, the fist being Los Angeles based Lorianna Marro's "You Must Believe in Spring" show at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/ ) at 7:00 pm. I received this lady's CD quite some time ago, and this show followed much of the same material as the CD - which I enjoyed immensely. A NYC cabaret debut for someone who has only been performing in this medium for a short time can be a scary thing, but Ms. Marro handled it all like a seasoned veteran. Musical director Tedd Firth, who Ms. Marro had only met a few days earlier, led his trio as though they had played this show a dozen times before. The result was a polished, professional performance. With heavenly vocals that lean to the jazz style, this was an evening that I enjoyed completely. The small, but very appreciative and supported audience surely got their money's worth. I look forward to a return visit from that super singer soon. Meantime, I will continue to enjoy the CD, with the same title as the show.

After a very quick sandwich, I crossed the street to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) to catch those two talented Australian lads, Patrick Lim and Anthony Hunt and their show "A Couple of Swells." What more can I say? I saw this show three times and each time found myself astonished at the amazing vocals, great fun and charming presentation. These "swells" were simply swell. I hope they hurry back soon!

Saturday night, October 16th, I was downtown, first to catch Jude Treder-Wolff's "ENCHANTMENT'S ... The Planet In The Window" show at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/ ) at 7:00 pm. Ms. Treder-Wolff has an amazing array of talents, which she alternates in this performance. She is a great "stand-up" style comic, with a number of "one-liners" that often stunned the room as the audience digested the witty and often pithy comments. She is also an excellent vocalist, and especially on the ballads, gave us treat after treat. She is also a creative arts psychotherapist, and brings to the show special insights and observations. Plus, one can see she gets special joy when she dons a nuns cap and changes into Sister Jude of the Impossible Situations. The show turns out to be a sort of one-woman variety show! Ian Herman was musical director for this performance (Wells Hanley will be at the piano for the rest of the show). Direction is by Erv Raible. "ENCHANTMENT'S ..." continues at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN on Saturdays, October 23rd & 30th at 7:00 pm.

Next, I crossed Seventh Avenue to head for THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) for the opening night of Julie Reyburn and David Gurland, performing together at 9:30 pm. When you combine two powerhouse talents like Ms. Reyburn and Mr. Gurland, and include musical director Tracy Stark, you are in for a rip-roaring show. That's exactly what happened when this trio of musical magicians took the stage together. There is an amazing variety of music and musical styles in this show - with songwriters from Arlen & Mercer to Roy Orbison to Carly Simon to Paul Simon. There does not seem to be any genre of music that either or both cannot sing. One "bump in the road" was a 70s "Mad Ladies" medley that could use a little tuning up - an consultation with medley master Michael Holland might be in order. On the other hand, the medley of "Happiness is a Thing Called Joe" intertwined with "Bill" was an incredible work that seemed to soar with emotional power. The show continues at THE DUPLEX on Saturdays at 7:00 pm on October 23rd & 30th and November 20th & 27th, and December 4th.

Sunday I took the day off, but was back in town on Monday, the 18th, and mid-town at UPSTAIRS at STUDIO 54 (254 West 54th Street, NYC) at 8:00 pm for Rick Crom's latest offering, "NEWSical," starring Kim Cea, Todd Alan Johnson, Stephanie Kurtzuba and Jeff Skowron. Ed Goldschneider on piano and Tim McLafferty on drums made up the band. The amazing thing about all of Mr. Crom's "news-based" show (this is the latest of a string of similar offerings going back several years), is that they are constantly updated. I saw it on Monday, the 18th, and recognized several references that concerned news that happened virtually over the weekend. Even a few songs sketches I recognized from earlier incarnations had been updated to reflect the news of the current week. The cast moves through sketch after comedy song after sketch in an amazing display of costume/wig changes, and quick blackouts. A few times the show tries to be "Forbidden Broadway," and falters. Also, in the nearly 2-hour show there were moments when I felt the cast was "phoning it in," not really involved in that part of the performance. But over all one stands in awe of Mr. Crom's wit and consistent clever thrusts and parries and he skewers the whole spectrum of social, religious and political viewpoints. The show continues in an open-ended run, Thursdays through Mondays at 8:00 pm (Sundays at 3:00 pm), and matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:00 pm. Tickets range from $20 to $60. For more information, see http://www.newsicalthemusical.com/ .

I really had no shows scheduled to see on Tuesday, October 19th, but I was in Manhattan to collect my mail, and decided to catch Kyndra Jones' debut at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) at 7:00 pm. What a pleasant surprise! Ms. Jones is as lovely to watch as to listen to - even though this was her first official cabaret performance. Her show is called "All of Me," and featured Gregory Toroian as musical director, with Phillip George as director. It was a small house - less than 10 in the audience - yet, Ms. Jones indeed gave her all. Of course it must have been especially inspiring to entertain her parents, who had travelled from Kansas to attend her debut. This young lady will be someone to watch in the months and years to come. She has one more show this month, on Saturday, October 23rd at 6:00 pm.

Last night, Wednesday, October 20th, I was back downtown for a "double-header at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) for Heather Stone's show at 7:00 pm. I saw this young lady perform several months ago and she so thrilled me, I was eager to see this show. Actually, the show "Special Skills" is an updating of the previous show. The title refers to that list of extraordinary talents that performers list at the bottom of their resume (can tap dance, can juggle, can drive, etc.). The show is directed by John Gray, and was conceived and written by Ms. Stone, along with Martin Charnin ("Annie"). Musical director was Barbara Anselmi, with Maureen Russell singing backup, Gilbert Cross on drums and Michael Blanco on bass. The show sort of documents Ms. Stone's life in small town Nash, Oklahoma, her solo journey east, and her experiences as a Broadway hopeful in New York City. The song list abounds with special material and song parodies, and the entire hour is filled with fun - with a little nostalgia thrown in. This gal never seems to stop smiling - her wholesome southwest "never say die" attitude is infectious as well as inspiring. This show is a must see - if enough MAC folks turn up for this one, Ms. Stone will be a real contender for the Cabaret Debut award. She has three shows left in this run, on Wednesday, October 27th at 7:00 pm, and Saturdays, November 6th & 13th at 5:00 pm.

Over 20 years ago I saw a play called "Forty Deuce" starring Orson Bean and noted that a show of the same name was playing at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ) at 9:30 pm, right after Heather Stone's show. I was told it was a revival of the same play, so I decided to see it again. Written by Alan Bowne, "Forty Deuce" tells the story of a quartet of young male prostitutes, who recruit a 15-year old into their group in hopes of making that big score. The setting is a seedy room in the Times Square area, used by the group to entertain clients, with a percentage going to the fellow who makes all the arrangements and an unseen big boss named Mike. To their chagrin, the youngster overdoses on heroin, and they now have more complications then their drug-addled minds can deal with. The warning in the program regarding violence and strong language should not be taken lightly. The producer and director have chosen their cast well, even though the play itself is weak in several areas. Each character gets a chance to make their own statements and observations as to what they stand for - almost as a means of justifying their actions. Someone observed after the show, the setting of the play is August, 1981 - thus no mention at all about AIDS or even condoms. One wonders how the play would have been written if the setting was the 90s instead of the 80s. The show continues at THE DUPLEX on Wednesdays at 9:30 pm through November. "Not for the faint of heart," says the program warning. To be taken seriously.

PROMOTE YOUR SHOW, CD OR OTHER EVENT WITH A BANNER ON THE WEBSITE
We sold out on banners for this week, and I don't want you to miss out if you are planning on running a banner for your show for the last week in October or early November. I limit the number of ads to 20 per week and in some weeks only a few slots remain. Last year we had to turn down banner advertisers in November, since several folks took advantage of the pre-holiday time to promote their CDs for holiday giving. No need to send money - just let me know if you wish to reserve space and for which weeks (banners run from Sunday through Saturday). A banner ad for three weeks can cost as little as $108 total - if you take advantage of the PayPal and Member Deals discounts - and even less if you are a GOLD member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. SILVER members receive a one-time rebate of $20 on their first banner ad of the membership year.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information about shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website first. I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside the NYC area. BREAKING NEWS items posted in the past week:

* "Hello, Boys" Returns to Don't Tell Mama
* Marcus Simeone & Eva Ladas in Duets Show at THE DUPLEX
* HEATHER STONE IN SPECIAL SKILLS AT THE DUPLEX
* BABY JANE DEXTER in "BREAD and GRAVY" at HELEN'S
* FRIENDS OF BARBRA IN "EVERGREED" IN OCTOBER
* MICHELINE VAN HAUTEM SINGS "SONGS OF JACQUES BREL"
* Maxim's Celebrates Halloween with Daryl Nitz
* TOM ANDERSEN AT THE CENTER ONE NIGHT ONLY
* DARYL SHERMAN AT PIZZA IN THE PARK FOR 2-WEEK ENGAGEMENT
* "ANDREA SINGS ASTAIRE" KICKS OFF OAK ROOM'S HOLIDAY SEASON
Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR MORE NEWS
I get plenty of show and event listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really difficult trying to choose which ones to publish, which ones to set aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc. Add a website link if available.

TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

Well, it is 2:30 pm - the DSL line came back on a little while ago, but still no phone. I am going to catch a nap and then head back downtown to The Village to catch Tom Andersen's show at THE CENTER (208 West 13th Street, NYC - 212-620-7310 - http://www.gaycenter.org/ ) at 7:00 pm, then scurry uptown to catch Michael Conley's show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/ ) at 8:30 pm (sounds like a close call on this one).

My friend Alan Kull is covering some of the Cabaret Convention shows at TOWN ALL this week for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, while I will continue to many of the shows in town for those that couldn't afford to attend (I know I can't). His report will be on the website early next week.

Once again a great big thank you to the nearly 300 folks who have joined and/or rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership year. Over 450 joined last membership year, which ended on July 5th. Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this whole operation going and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE bigger and better in the months to come.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
