Since 1990 Your First, Best, and Only Complete Source of Cabaret News

to do with cabaret, you'll probably read it here first!
This is the MIDWEEK Issue this of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, which includes
news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, mini-reviews, plus listings
of shows offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The
MONDAY Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret listings for

NOTES AND THOUGHTS FROM ALL
OVER
Years ago, when CABARET HOTLINE
was a print magazine instead of an online newsletter/website, I would
faithfully go from club to club here in NYC around December 1st and
check what was happening on NEW YEAR'S EVE for publication in the usual
December 15th issue (we published two issues per month at that time).
Most often I would receive the response "Oh, we better work on something."
The same thing would happen when I would ask about Valentine's Day,
St. Patrick's Day, Mardi Gras, and other holidays that were natural
celebration dates for clubs and cabarets.
For the past
few issues I have been making the same request regarding New Year's
Eve shows and events, asking folks to send in information - and have
been met generally with the same response, something like "Oh, we
plan to do something, but it hasn't been worked out yet." I had hoped
to promote a few dozen such events in this issue, but I've ended up
with just a few to announce. I plan to put this list on a special
page on the website, with photos if available, and will add any more
that I find there. I know that if I would check all the club websites
I will find a few more, but the ones I have looked at so far have
given me few clues.
Consequently,
this issue is somewhat shorter than planned. Sorry.
Check out a new feature on
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website: iTunes Cabaret CD Pick of the week
- you can download the CD for $9.99 or single songs for just 99 cents!
We will feature a new CD starting on Sundays - this week we feature
D.C. Anderson's latest CD, Ballad. You will need to download the iTunes
application, available for PC or Mac, if you do not already have it
on your computer. On my website you can also find a link to download
iTunes' featured "single" of the week - for free.
It has been a week of recovery
for me from a double-whammy of colds - which prevented me from seeing
any cabaret shows for several days. I was in town on Monday for Nancy
Witter's spectacular cabaret solo debut stand-up comedy show on Monday
night, and went to a private Christmas party that a friend gives every
year on Tuesday night, but then a giant Arctic air mass came to town
and I stayed indoors last night. Tonight I shall venture forth for two
shows and have a fairly full schedule through the 23rd.
Also, we are slowly approaching
350 memberships in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the 2004-2005 membership
year. However, memberships and banner ad revenue continues to lag behind
last year at this time - by nearly $4,000! About 150 folks who were
members last year still have not renewed for the new year. Last year
we offered a reduced price membership after January 1st, but this year,
instead, we are setting aside a portion of each membership for a fund
to pay folks to write reviews from other areas outside of NYC. Details
are found near the end of this issue.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON NEW

and has released four solo albums. All of these albums have been major
inspirations to many people across the planet. He is best known to Australian

PROMOTE YOUR SHOW, CD OR
OTHER EVENT WITH A BANNER ON THE WEBSITE
If you are planning on running
a banner for your show or CD in December, be sure to get your order
in. I limit the number of ads to 20 per week and in some weeks only
a few slots remain. Last year we had to turn down banner advertisers,
since several folks took advantage of the pre-holiday time to promote
their CDs for holiday giving. Please let me know if you wish to reserve
space and for which weeks (banners run from Sunday through Saturday).
A banner ad for three weeks can cost as little as $108 total - if you
take advantage of the PayPal and Member Deals discounts - and even less
if you are a GOLD member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. SILVER members receive
a one-time rebate of $20 on their first banner ad of the membership
year.
Performers
running banners get a special listing for their show or other cabaret-related
item in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, reaching nearly
2,500 subscribers. Go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerHere.shtml
or else just send me a note at banners@svhamstra.com
with the single word "banners" in the subject line, and I'll send
all the details.
SHOWS SEEN IN THE PAST WEEK
Valentine Ryder is currently
performing at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC
- 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/
) with his CD release show, "Love Who You Love." Val's shows run every
Thursday night at 7:00 pm through December 30th. I caught the performance
on December 9th. Many of the numbers in the show (and on the CD) are
mini 2 or 3 songs medleys, cleverly arranged by musical director Barry
Levitt. Mr. Ryder with backed by Barry's trio, with Cameron Brown on
bass and Brian Grice on drums (they also appear on the CD with additional
musicians). Val withdrew from cabaret several years ago, after a very
active and successful cabaret career that included actually booking
a cabaret room for some time. It is a joy to see this magical voice
return to the cabaret room, and in this show Mr. Ryder displays just
about every facet of his vocals - from ballad to swing. In a show delightfully
free of extensive patter, he presents an evening of mostly show and
movie tunes. Every song comes from the heart, and that's the way cabaret
should be.
Scott Coulter, Steven Ray
Watkins and Lennie Watts presented their Annual "A Christmas To Remember"
show just twice this year, on December 9th & 13th,at MAMA ROSE'S (219
Second Avenue, NYC - 212-533-0558 - http://www.mamaroses.net/
). I attended the show on the 9th and my only regret is that I had no
chance to encourage you all to catch this show before its final performance.
The vocal/musical blending of these three performers was recognized
some time back with a Bistro Award, and once again it was an evening
to remember. The holiday tunes presented took on a special flavor, thanks
to the sumptuous arrangements of Mr. Watkins, who accompanied as well
as sang in the trio. The impromptu patter added to the "down-home" feel
of the show, with the lads relating tales of Christmas past, present
and future (but without the ghosts). With little publicity sent out,
the audience was small (not helped by a steady drizzle outside). But
the glow and warmth of the music and performance made this another treasured
moment in my personal holiday season.
Nancy Witter won this year's
MAC Award for Stand Up Comedy, but I had never heard her perform in
a solo Stand Up show. This void in my life was filled on Monday, December
13th (which date happened to be Ms. Witter's birthday) when this very
funny lady performed her show "Dignity Check, Please!" at DON'T TELL
MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
). The house was packed with family, fans and at least a dozen stand-up
comic regulars from around town. There was not an empty seat in the
house (and four more chairs were brought in to accommodate some late
arriving family members). Nancy mixed many of her standard bits with
some bright and funny new material that had the audience laughing and
cheering throughout the hour. She closed the show (after a well deserved
standing ovation) with a "comedy encore" consisting of a dozen or more
old comic chestnuts, while seating at a drum set and giving herself
a ruffle on the snare drum after each punch line. Nancy was also very
gracious in thanking all the many folks who gave her advice, encouragement
and even comedy guest slots along the way. The show will be repeated
by very popular demand on Tuesday night, December 28th, at 6:30 pm.
This show sold out virtually within minutes of being announced. The
reservation phone lines open at 4:00 pm - I wouldn't wait to make that
reservation!
Just a note: From time to
time I attend a cabaret show, take notes, and then no review appears
here. This usually happens when I see a debut show and I feel that the
performer needs a little more experience before being subjected to a
critical review. If I attend your show, and you are new to cabaret and
prefer not to be reviewed in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just have your
director let me know. Don't ask, however, if you have a publicist promoting
your show, or if you are charging a cover that I feel is a bit excessive
for your experience level. The absence of a review does not mean that
I did not enjoy your show.

NEWS FROM CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE
MY WISH FOR THE NEW YEAR
- REVIEWS FROM ALL OVER
The REVIEWS section of the
website is in the process of renovation. In addition to adding reprints
of the mini-reviews from the MID-WEEK ISSUES of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE,
and moving pre-2003 reviews to a special ARCHIVES section, I have decided
to seek folks to write reviews other areas as well. Up to now there
have been no funds to accomplish this, but I have a new idea. $10 of
every membership received from folks living outside the NYC area and
$5 from every membership received from folks in the NYC area will be
set aside in a special fund to pay for non-NYC reviews. A very special
subscriber has already donated a gift of $100 for this purpose. When
the initial goal of $200 is received, we will try to make arrangements
with writers in BOSTON, CHICAGO, LOS ANGELES and SAN FRANCISCO as a
start.
If you live
outside the NYC area, especially in one of these "starter" cities,
now is a good time to join - and support cabaret and cabaret artists
in your communities. If we don't reach our $200 goal by December 31st,
we will try to come up with a new idea to raise funds in order to
cover non-NYC events. When the 2005-2006 memberships become available
on May 5th (the membership year starts on July 6th), $10 from all
GOLD memberships and $5 from all SILVER memberships received will
be set aside for non-NYC reviewers.
If you live
in one of these areas and would like to join our staff as a local
reporter/reviewer, drop me a line (stuhamstra@svhamstra.com) and we
will discuss our needs, our rules and proper compensation possibilities.
If successful, and if funds permit, we will add other cities as well.
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE LOOKING
FOR MORE NEWS
I get plenty of show and
event listings sent me - far more than I can possibly use - it is really
difficult trying to choose which ones to publish, which ones to set
aside. Sometimes the item itself makes this choice - incomplete information
or just a scan of a flier, neither of which is useful to me. I would
love to have more items from outside NYC, especially NEWS items - new
venues opening, benefits, CD Releases, celebrations, new pianos, etc.
Add a website link if available.
MINI-REVIEWS NOW POSTED ON
THE WEBSITE
Every MID-WEEK issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE lately has contained mini-reviews of shows seen for the
previous seven days. For the convenience of our website visitors, I
have been extracting the reviews and creating new web pages for each
week's write-ups. I am working my way backwards in time, through the
MID-WEEK newsletters, adding photos when available, and generally fixing
typos, etc.

CABARET NEWS ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows
around the country and around the world can be found on the BREAKING
NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the BREAKING NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at
least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. By the way, I try to get information about
shows offering CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discounts up on the website first.
I am also especially interested in releases on shows outside the NYC
area.
Please send
me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your
flier or a reference to a website. With two newsletters going out
a week, I don't have enough time to look these things up, and often
have to simply toss out incomplete items. By the way, I usually trim
quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using
the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when
putting together the four or more paragraphs.
TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?
Tonight I
will be back on "the circuit" with my first stop at DON'T TELL MAMA
(343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/
) for Seth Rudetsky's Broadway Chatterbox interview show at 6:00 pm.
Then, after dinner, I want to check out a performer I am not familiar
with named Zach Two, at 8:30 pm, also at MAMA'S.
As mentioned
earlier, I have a full schedule planned between tonight and December
23rd, after which time things cabaret slow down a bit, at least here
in NYC, until after January 1st.
Once again
a great big thank you to the nearly 350 folks who have joined and/or
rejoined CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as members for the 2004-2005 membership
year. Over 450 joined last membership year, which ended on July 5th.
Your support through memberships and banner advertising keeps this
whole operation going and growing. Help make CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
bigger and better in the months to come.
And that is just about the
way it was.
