CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
2008-2009 MEMBERS' CHOICE
FAVORITE CONTEMPORARY
CABARET SONG AWARD NOMINEES

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is trying
to find the MEMBERS CHOICE of the favorite cabaret songs of all times. Nominations and voting may only
be made by 2007-2008 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (click on the
MEMBERS button above to see if you are a paid-up member). In this MEMBERS' CHOICE poll, 2008-2009 were asked to nominate their favorite "cabaret song" of all time. The best way to describe what a "cabaret song" is would be to give some examples, so I have chosen (and nominated) four songs that are among my favorites (I'm allowed to pick four because I can). Balloting began on Sunday, September 7, 2008 and all ballots must be received by Friday, September 19, 2008.
NOMINATIONS CLOSED SEPTEMBER 3, 2008
PRELIMINARY NOMINATIONS
"Every Night I Sleep With an Angel" by Tom Andersen & Tim DiPasqua
nominated by Stu Hamstra
Comment: "The first time I heard this song I was simply overcome by its poignant yet simple story of what love - true love - is really all about."
"Another Tuesday" by Tom Andersen
nominated by D.C. Anderson
Comments: "Simple, clear, poignant lyric. Melody you cannot forget."
"Grateful" by John Bucchino
nominated by Philomena Post
Comments: "Grateful is one of the most affecting, inspirational songs I've ever heard. Its graceful melody and irregular rhythm make it hard to forget. Whenever I perform it, I'm amazed at what strong emotions it evokes in an audience."
"Temporary" by John Bucchino
nominated by Stu Hamstra
Comments: "Denise Whittier introduced me to this one, in her show/CD "Story Songs" and I am touched by it every time I hear it."

"Gershwin Tune" by Francesca Blumenthal
nominated by Stu Hamstra
Comments: "If you love music and you love love, this one will sweep you off your feet."
"Stars and the Moon" by Jason Robert Brown
nominated by Darrel Karl
Comments: "A terrific story-song (from the revue SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD) that has been performed and recorded by the likes of Karen Akers, Audra McDonald, Betty Buckley, Jessica Molaskey, and Jaymie Meyer."

"Finding Beauty" by Ann Hampton Callaway
nominated by Tobi Taub
Comments: "Ann Hampton Callaway has written quintessential love songs her entire career. Well, she has done it again & each time I listen to this song, i think 'Wow, what tremendous love she has in her heart & brilliant mind!'"
"I Dreamed of You" by Ann Hampton Callaway
nominated by Maureen Concannon
COMMENTS: "This song painted such a clear picture of a person understanding that she/he had created her love in her imagination and then found that very person."

"Flight" by Craig Carnelia
nominated by Mel White
Comments: "Picking one of Craig's songs is impossible for me; this one is (I've been told) a singer's song, full of emotion, passion and movement. Its soaring and swelling and receding are like a vocal ocean!"
"What You'd Call A Dream" by Craig Carnelia
nominated by Linda Kosut
Comments: "This is one of those perfect cabaret songs - one whose story is at the same time obvious and surprising, and in this case, moving. A tale of a child and his (or her) dad. No matter how many times I perform this tune, not only do I have the images in my mind and my history, but I know my audience relates in the same way. A really good song this is!"
"Help Is On The Way" by David Friedman
nominated by Stu Hamstra
Comments: "This song has almost become my mantra - yet the first time I heard it the vocalist was actor/comic/singer Jason Alexander at an AIDS benefit!"

"Listen to My Heart" by David Friedman
nominated by Maria Crisci
Comments: "I am so grateful to have found a song that relects my feelings, and helps me to connect with those who listen to me sing. That's what a song should do and that's what Cabaret is all about."

"Humbled" by Dick Gallagher
nominated by Eric Michael Gillett
Comments: "One of the most moving songs I've ever heard. All these years after first hearing it, I can't get it's haunting refrain out of my head."
"Whatever Happened to Melody?" by Ray Jessel & Cynthia Thompson
nominated by Ellen Ciompi
Comments: "Very sweet, sincere, and from the heart. Plus, I completely agree with the sentiment!"
"Short Term Memory Loss Blues" by Ray Jessell
nominated by Myra Chanin
"Time" by Barry Kleinbort & Joseph Thalken
nominated by Jamie deRoy
Comments: "I've heard it sung by Polly Bergen, Rebecca Luker, Eric Michael Gillet - it is gorgeous!"
"Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind" by Christine Lavin
nominated by Suzanne Carrico
Comments: "Every person can relate to this song on multiple levels ... it is human & always funny - every time you hear it, it never gets old."

"Not Exactly Paris" by Michael Leonard and Russell George
nominated by Janet Rothstein
Comments: "I first heard it at a program dedicated to Mickey Leonard and was so moved by it that I asked him where I could get a copy and he said I'll fax it you, which he did. It just speaks to me."

"I Should Go Home" by Bob Levy
nominated by Joe Peck
Comments: "It's a lovely tune and very poignant - expressing a sentiment and a relationship situation that many people can empathize with. I used it in one of my shows, and it got a lot of audience response afterward."

"Inside My Body Is A Dancer" by Steven Lutvak
nominated by Francesca Blumenthal
Comments: "Inside my body is a dancer. I took ballet classes for many years and my aunt was a ballet teacher who was often mistaken for Moira Shearer."
"The Sweetest of Nights and the Finest of Days" by Shelly Markham & Judith Viorst
nominated by Ron Squeri
Comments: "This is the perfect closer or encore (as well as "occassion" song). If you want to leave an audience with the warmest of feelings, this is the song. "

"Putting Things Away" by Amanda McBroom
nominated by Beverly Cosham
Comments: "This song of missed opportunities and regret seems to resonate with most listeners. Other than Ms. McBroom and me, haven't heard anyone else singing this beautiful poignant song."
"Errol Flynn" by Amanda McBroom & Gordon Hunt
nominated by Tom Stajmiger
Comments: "To me this is the perfect cabaret song - great melody, great story and an ending that is not revealed until the end. Amanda singing this song is perfection as it is her story, but I have heard many singers perform the song and each and every time it is the highlight of their show."
"A Special Place" by Bob Ost
nominated by Vickie Phillips
Comments: "'Love and Laughter was the first Bob Ost revue I performed in at Jan Wallman's (uptown). It was a very meaningful show ... and had this song for me."

"Meadowlark" by Stephen Schwartz
nominated by Janet Villas
Comments: "It's the song I play over and over again. Liz Liz Calloway performs it beautifully."

"You Believe in Me" by Tom Toce & Zina Goldrich
nominated by Cynthia Crane
Comments: "An unusual take on love. I get through life because you believe in me and that gives me strength."
