17th Hot Summer of Cool Jazz! - July 16 - 26 - Dick Hyman, Artistic Director

NEW YORK, NY: MAY 30, 2001 Æ The ultimate summer oasis for New York jazz fans returns for its 17th extraordinary year from July 16th to 26th at the 92nd STREET Y TISCH CENTER FOR THE ARTS. Jazz in July's artistic director Dick Hyman has assembled some of the world's greatest jazz artists for ten days of intense collaborations, dynamite duos, and unpredictable jam sessions. Hyman and friends also step back in time to recreate some of the greatest moments in jazz history.


Monday, July 16 at 8:15 pm
Master Class with Dick Hyman and Derek Smith

Hyman and Smith meet and critique six applicants ranging from skilled amateurs to professionals and discuss and illustrate two-piano techniques in jazz improvisation. This class takes place in the Y's Buttenweiser Hall.

Americans in Paris

A musical step back to post-World War I when some of the greatest American jazz artists flocked to Paris. Americans in Paris takes its inspiration from the heyday of the Parisian jazz scene that attracted Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Paul Whiteman, Josephine Baker, Benny Carter, Joe Turner, and American songwriters, George Gershwin and Cole Porter.

Jazz greats Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, and Cab Calloway are among those whose music was adapted for cartoons. Excerpts from cartoons will be shown and all-star musicians will improvise on the "car-tunes" that became jazz standards.

At a time when America was highly segregated, pianist-composer Jelly Roll Morton recorded four pieces with The New Orleans Rhythm Kings, a seminal all-white orchestra. This first integrated recording session in the 1920s, which became a model for successive generations, is recreated.

Remarkably, stride piano, the Harlem style that arose in the 1920s, found new exponents in Europe. France's Louis Mazetier and England's Neville Dickie join American stridemasters in a multi-piano concert.
