UTE LEMPER RETURNS TO JOE'S PUB SONGBOOK SERIES SEPTEMBER 6th THROUGH 16th

GERMAN CABARET LEGEND AND BROADWAY STAR KICKS OFF THE 2001-2002 SONGBOOK SERIES SEPTEMBER 6 THROUGH 16 AT 8:30 pm

The Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, George C. Wolfe, Producer, Fran Reiter, Executive Director, is pleased to announce that Broadway star, recording artist, and German cabaret legend Ute Lemper will kick off the 2001-2 season of the Songbook Series at JOE'S PUB (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - Tele-Charge: 212-239-6200 - Box Office: 212-539-8778 - http://www.joespub.com/). Performances are September 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th. All shows are at 8:30 pm. Ticket prices are $35 and can be purchased at the Public Theater box office or via Tele-Charge.

Ute Lemper has been universally praised for her work on the stage, in film, in concert, and as a recording artist, receiving acclaim for her interpretations of Berlin Cabaret Songs, the works of Kurt Weill and French chanson, and for her portrayals on Broadway and in London's West End.

Ms. Lemper will be drawing material for these Joe's Pub performances from her upcoming West End show entitled "Naughty Baby." She'll mix jazz, blues, rock, and German cabaret with her uniquely funky, sexy, and often political style, while singing the music of Eisler, Brecht & Weill, Brel, and her own original songs.

The Songbook Series at Joe's Pub began in November 1998 when Audra McDonald opened the series (and the room) with a concert of her debut recording "Way Back to Paradise," which featured the work of the new generation of theater songwriters, particularly Jason Robert Brown, Ricky Ian Gordon, Adam Guettel and Michael John LaChiusa. The series continues to emphasize both new songwriters and such neglected writers as Vernon Duke, Marc Blitzstein and William Bolcom & Arnold Weinstein.ęSingers are drawn from the worlds of Broadway, opera, the concert hall and cabaret. Regular Songbook performers include Ute Lemper and Lea DeLaria.

The Songbook Series received a 2001 BACK STAGE Bistro Award "for exploring, perpetuating and enhancing the ever-expanding Great American Songbook."

Tickets to events at Joe's Pub can be purchased at The Public Theater box office Tuesday-Saturday from 1:00 pm to 7:30 pm; Sunday and Monday from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm or via Tele-Charge.

Joe's Pub opens for dinner at 6 pm each evening. To make reservations, call 212-539-8778.

Joe's Pub is sponsored, in part, by Philip Morris Companies Inc.
