With March designated as "Cabaret Month" by the City of New York,
The MAC Awards are the culmination of a four week celebration of Manhattan's
cabarets, nightclubs and its abundance of live talent. The MAC Awards
are presented annually to honor achievements in cabaret, comedy and
jazz. The Awards encompass more than two dozen categories, including
vocalists and vocal groups, piano bar and jazz performers, comedy
and musical performers, writers of songs and special material, directors,
musical directors and technical directors, recordings, and more. In
addition, through special awards, MAC salutes outstanding contributions
to the field of live entertainment.
"Manhattan
has a legendary tradition of cabaret," says event producer Nancy McGraw.
"The Oak Room, Julie Wilson, MargaretWhiting, Bobby Short and The
Cafœ Carlyle are just some of the living legends that are still very
much a part of our cabaret world today. Keeping the tradition alive,
MAC now has 54 participating clubs throughout New York City and nationwide.
Since its creation in 1983, many of the performers who have appeared
on our stages have branched out to successful careers in recordings,
Broadway and Off-Broadway, television and film. For fifteen years,
the MAC Awards has served as a wonderful coming home event as well
as a night to honor our legends and rising artists within the community
of live performers. It's a quintessential New York night on the town."
