REVUE RETURNS TO CELEBRATE
PORTIA NELSON'S 'LIFE'

"This Life: The Songs of Portia Nelson," the 2001 Bistro Award winner for Outstanding Musical Revue, is returning and will play an encore engagement Thursdays, May 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th at 9 pm at THE FIREBIRD CAFE (363 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-586-0244 - http://www.firebirdrestaurant.com/). Saluting her work will be an acclaimed trio of Broadway and cabaret stars: Tom Andersen, Terri Klausner and Deborah Tranelli. There will be a $30 cover charge and a $15 food-drink minimum.

"This Life" is a salute to the songs of Portia Nelson, who was a true Renaissance lady: singer, actress, songwriter and author. As an actress, she was best-known as Sister Berthe in the 1965 movie of "The Sound of Music" and as Minerva in the 1954 Broadway musical "The Golden Apple."

As a singer, she played classic nightspots like the Blue Angel and the Bon Soir during the 1950s. As for her songs, they were sung by Ann Hampton Callaway, Nancy LaMott and Michael Feinstein, and Marilyn Horne performed her "Make a Rainbow" at President Clinton's inaugural. Besides the latter tune, "This Life" will include "Confession of a New Yorker" ("I Love/Hate New York") and "As I Remember Him," the 1996 MAC Award winner for Song of the Year.

Though Nelson was in poor health, she was excited to attend the closing performance of "This Life" last October 11, when it played DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmama.com/). The cabaret legend died March 6th at age 80, only one day after the show's director, John Znidarsic, and musical director, Paul Katz, were honored with 2001 BACK STAGE Bistro Awards.

The cast of "This Life" includes: Tom Andersen, a five-time MAC Award- winning singer/songwriter who's played Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center; Terri Klausner, an Obie Award winner for Polly Pen's "Bed & Sofa" and a Broadway veteran of "Evita" and "Sophisticated Ladies," and Deborah Tranelli, a Bistro Award-winning singer who's sung at the Russian Tea Room and Town Hall and a TV co-star (she played Phyllis for 11 seasons on the TV hit series "Dallas").

"Tom, Terri and Deborah are all wonderful in their own right; however, the combination of these three is truly something special," Znidarsic says. "I'm so glad we're getting another chance to share Portia's work at the FireBird. She was not only one of the most talented people I ever met, she was one of the dearest."
