Brava Theater Center Presents LILA DOWNS

Brava! for Women in the Arts is proud to present Mexican vocalist Lila Downs and her unique interpretation of World Music from indigenous Mexico at THE BRAVA THEATER CENTER (2789 24th Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-647-2822 - http://www.brava.org/) on Wednesday, October 2nd through Sunday, October 6th - all shows at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $24. After playing to a sold-out house at Brava in April, Lila (pronounced Lee-la), accompanied by her 5-piece band, returns to Brava for 5 shows!

Lila fuses traditional Mexican music with jazz, folk, and blues“ both in the form of original and traditional compositions. The daughter of a Mixtec Indian mother and a Scottish-American father, Lila grew up in both Oaxaca and Minnesota. At an early age, she studied classical voice and opera and also sang with mariachi bands in Mexico. She later went on to study voice and anthropology at The University of Minnesota (and to follow the Grateful Dead).

Ms. Downs has a loyal following in the Bay Area and has toured extensively in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Europe, accompanied by her band of musicians from Mexico, Cuba, Argentina and Paraguay. Her intense performances and provocative lyrics have captivated audiences from around the world and have made her a legend in her native Mexico. Transformed by the lyrics she sings, Lila penetrates the soul and the mind as she retells the often bittersweet stories of her ancestors and homeland. She is a world music diva in the making.

Lila performs original compositions as well as native Meso-American music that she has reworked. She sings in Spanish, English and the indigenous languages Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya and Nahuatl. Her repertoire includes rancheras, cumbias, boleros, jazz, cabaret, folk, blues, and gospel. Lila has recorded 3 CDs: La Sandunga; Yutu Tata/Arbol de la Vida/Tree of Life; and most recently Border/La Linea, a collection of songs inspired by border life, the plight of migrant workers, and the hardships and racism endured by indigenous peoples.

Lila currently lives in Coyoacan, Mexico City (known as home to Frida Kahlo). She recorded 3 songs, including La Llorona, for the film "Frida," due out in October.
