MUSIC BY THEATRE COMPOSERS PRESENTED IN A CABARET VENUE

THE OTHER SIDE OF BROADWAY
TO PRESENT SONGS OF THE POETS
"The Other Side of Broadway,"
which debuted in New York City in November of 1998, will present its
second art song cabaret entitled "Songs of the Poets." There will
be two performances of the same program, September 23rd and 30th,
at 7:00 pm at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (342 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-265-8133
- http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/).
Barbara Irvine, the New York-based classical pianist and theatre music
director who heads "The Other Side of Broadway," will be the pianist
and music director. The performances will be directed by Tom O'Horgan,
the legendary director of the original Broadway production of HAIR.
The music charge is $20 and there is a $10 food/drink minimum.
The program will feature
the texts of Sullivan Ballou, William Blake, Robert Bly, Emily Dickinson,
Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Thomas Hardy, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Walt
Whitman, and William Carlos Williams, set to music by composers best
known for their theatre scores: David Friedman (KING ISLAND CHRISTMAS,
NICOLETTE & AUCASSIN); John Kander (CABARET, CHICAGO); Galt McDermott
(HAIR, TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA); Norman Mathews (YOU MIGHT AS WELL
LIVE, LOST EMPIRES); Charles Strouse (ANNIE, BYE BYE BIRDIE); RICHARD
PEARSON THOMAS (GOLDEN GATE, LADIES IN A MAZE); and Elliot Weiss (BITTERSUITE:
SONGS OF EXPERIENCE, THE WITCH OF WALL STREET).
The program will include
selections from: Norman Mathews” "Songs of the Poet" (text by Walt
Whitman); Galt MacDermott's "The Thomas Hardy Songs" (Thomas Hardy);
Charles Strouse's "Songs of Innocence" (William Blake); David Friedman's
"Eight Poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay;" Elliot Weiss” "Taking the
Hands" (Robert Bly) and "This is Just to Say" (William Carlos Williams);
John Kander's "A Letter From Sullivan Ballou;" and Richard Pearson
Thomas” "Seeing a Woman as in a Painting by Berthe Morisot" (Lawrence
Ferlinghetti) and "At Last to be Identified" (Emily Dickinson). The
singers will be Kelly Ellenwood, soprano, (Carlotta in Broadway's
"The Phantom of the Opera;" Mrs. Fezziwig in Madison Square Garden's
"A Christmas Carol"), and Peter Samuel, baritone (Broadway: Javert
in "Les Miserables;" Parade; The Secret Garden).
The Other Side of Broadway
is a project devoted to the performance and preservation of classical
music by established and emerging theatre composers. Through its entertaining
and informative concerts The Other Side of Broadway seeks to develop
new audiences for musical theatre, classical music and cabaret, and
to provide an outlet through which theatre composers can have their
little known but worthy classical 'other side' heard.
