Richard Rodgers' contributions
to the musical theatre of his day were extraordinary, and his influence
on the musical theatre of today and tomorrow is legendary. In a career
that spanned more than six decades, his hits ranged from Hollywood's
silver screens to Broadway's bright lights and beyond. He was the
recipient of countless awards, including Pulitzers, Tonys, Oscars,
Grammys and Emmys, and he wrote more than 900 published songs and
40 Broadway musicals.
Critically
acclaimed Chicago vocalist Jackie Allen will pay homage to Rodgers
with her interpretations of his compositions. A versatile performer,
Allen expands the familiar jazz lexicon with harmonic and structural
changes and other times by adding pop and blues connotations. Her
debut release, "Never Let Me Go" on Lake Shore jazz, received glowing
reviews in Down Beat, Jazz Times, Swing Journal and the Chicago Tribune.
Allen's subsequent recordings reveal her talent and ability to transcend
the label of jazz singer.
Ms. Allen frequently collaborates
with Judy Roberts, an active pianist and vocalist since the 1960s.
Seasoned
jazz vocalist and cabaret performer Spider Saloff joins Allen and
Roberts in the Rodgers tribute. Saloff was named Best Female Jazz
Vocalist of 1993 by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and recently
received special honors from the Grammy Association for her musical
contributions to cabaret. She has performed at New York's best nightclubs
and has been touring with her critically acclaimed concert "Spider
Saloff Sings Gershwin."
MAXIM'S: The Nancy Goldberg
International Center, located in the Astor Tower, 24 East Goethe Street,
Chicago, IL, presents monthly programs that invite the public to enjoy
the elegant art nouveau facility. Opened in 1963, Maxim's is a replica
of the famous Parisian restaurant. Like the original, Maxim's recreates
the opulence of art nouveau. Every inch of the Paris original is duplicated,
from the famed art nouveau scroll work and plush red banquettes to
the glistening inlays of brass and stained glass and rich mahogany
tones. The facility was given to the City of Chicago by the family
of the late Bertrand and Nancy Goldberg, and it is now being operated
by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs as a private meeting
and reception facility.
