Barbara Carroll, first lady of jazz piano, will return to her jazz roots with an extended run at the legendary jazz club BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 1-212-581-3080), beginning January 8th. She plays on selected Wednesdays through June, 2003: January 8th, 22nd; February 26th; March 5th, 19th; April 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th; May 14th, 21st, 28th; and June 4th. Ms. Carroll performs two sets per evening at 9:00 and 11:00 pm and is accompanied by Jay Leonhart on bass and Joe Cocuzzo on drums. There is a $25 cover charge with a $10 minimum.

Ms. Carroll recently completed her record-breaking run at the famed Bemelman's Bar in the Carlyle Hotel, where she appeared annually for two extended engagements for 24 years. She is now coming back to the type of jazz club that made her famous in the 1950s. After making her New York debut at the celebrated Downbeat Club on 52nd Street, she went on to perform in major music rooms across the country. Her audience regularly comprised of luminaries such as Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett and Dinah Washington, among many others. Now, as then, she will perform the work of composers like Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn and Thelonius Monk. No matter what the song, Ms. Carroll always connects with her audience through the passion, joy and emotional power of her performance.

"One Morning In May," Ms. Carroll's most recent CD, was released by Fynsworth Alley / After 9 Records. This subtle and sophisticated performance in Barbara's trademark progressive, percussive and lyrical style features an all-star lineup: Jay Leonhart on bass, Joe Cocuzzo on drums, Ken Peplowski on tenor sax and clarinet, Jay Berliner on guitar and Randy Sanke on trumpet. Barbara plays and sings classic jazz standards by Gershwin & Gershwin and Rodgers & Hart, as well as rare numbers by Sammy Cahn, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and more. Also included are original compositions by Ms. Carroll.

Barbara Carroll is an elegant jazz pianist, composer and vocalist who is regarded as one of the most fascinating purveyors of swinging jazz piano and expressive vocals. Her inventive piano playing and unique vocal sound insure that she will infuse her work with emotional directness and respect for the tune. Her diverse musical career has encompassed appearances on Broadway in Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Me and Juliet," major TV shows, concert halls, jazz festivals and clubs throughout the world. She has made over thirty recordings on labels such as Atlantic, RCA Victor, Verve, Blue Note and DRG. This year, Ms. Carroll was personally selected by Dr. Billy Taylor to receive the Kennedy Center's prestigious "Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award" in May 2003.
