Cy Coleman and Special Guest Lillias White in Chicago

For its annual celebration of living composers, the Chicago Humanities Festival pays tribute to one of America's most versatile and influential music creators, Cy Coleman, whom one critic calls "a permanent jewel in Broadway's musical crown."

Mr. Coleman will be featured artist at a special pre-Festival evening of music and merriment on Thursday, September 18th at 7:00 pm at the MERLE RESKIN THEATRE (60 East Balbo Avenue, Chicago, IL - 312-922-1999). Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune theater critic, will interview Mr. Coleman on stage, followed by acclaimed Chicago singers performing hits from Coleman musicals. Between each song Coleman offers his insights into the character, music, and context of the pieces. Also appearing on stage is Broadway star Lillias White. She is the quadruple winner of the 1997 Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Award and the People's Choice Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Sonja in Coleman's THE LIFE. ASCAP Assistant Vice President, Michael Kerker is producer and emcee for the evening. Tickets are $75, $40, and $10 per person. There are also a limited number of free tickets for students and teachers.

A multi award-winning producer, lyricist, composer, writer, and musical director, Coleman's many Broadway triumphs include Little Me, Barnum, City of Angels, and Sweet Charity, which produced the huge hit "Big Spender." For over half a century, Coleman has been one of Broadway's most acclaimed composers and his work has won him multiple Tonys, Emmys, and Grammys as well as an Oscar nomination. His extraordinary success also extends to films, recordings, television, and the concert stage.

Revenue from this special concert will support the education programs of the Chicago Humanities Festival, including "Classics in Context," seminars for teachers on world literature, student writing workshops, and book review seminars.

The Chicago Humanities Festival is an independent, not-for-profit cultural and educational institution with a mission to create opportunities for people of all ages to support, enjoy, and explore the humanities.
