The show,
a musical tribute to premier vocalists Tony Bennett, Nat "King" Cole,
Bing Crosby, Billy Eckstine, Frank Sinatra and Joe Williams, offers
a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the story of six legendary singers. A
story that illustrates how six men knew, learned from and influenced
each other to create and perform some of the greatest music of our
time.
"Songs They
Sang ... " transports the audience to a time and era gone by. Each
song evokes a different emotional experience, and offers the listener
both a chance to reminisce and an opportunity to hear and experience
something for the first time. Throughout the show, the audience experiences
a fascinating blend of anecdotes and music that shows the deeply emotional
side of Sinatra, the sweet nature that breathes life into the music
of Nat "King" Cole; the "blues" behind balladeer, Joe Williams; and
the stylish balladry of Eckstine. Also, it shares gems of music history
such as how Bing Crosby became "the voice" of a Nation and which entertainment
legends discovered Tony Bennett and gave him his stage name. The music
ranges from classic pop standards such as "All or Nothing At All"
sung by Frank Sinatra to bluesy soul "Every Day" (I Have the Blues),
a signature number sung by Joe Williams, to other pop and jazz classics.
Every selection is Malavet's personalized rendition of a "classic'
and paints a picture of the emotions men experience.
"Songs They
Sang ..." is Malavet's third cabaret show. His last project, "Right
to Love," was held over twice and was a hit with audiences and critics.
"Songs" unites a team of diverse talent including composer, pianist
and award-wining musical director Ross Patterson and the versatile
and multi-talented director, Patricia Norcia. Moving forward, the
team plans to expand the show into a theatre project. The project
will offer a unprecedented combination of musical performance and
multi-media -- transforming audiences to another place and time via
a virtual world of slides, photos and lighting. Mama Rose's, one of
NYC's newest and hottest cabaret rooms, is getting great buzz for
its state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems.
