Business Boot Camp for Musicians in Boston

On Saturday, March 13, 2004 the CAMBRIDGE CENTER FOR ADULT EDUCATION (56 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-547-6789 - Ext. 1 - http://www.ccae.org/) presents a workshop with Cambridge resident Bobbi Carrey on Saturday, March 13th from noon to 4:00 pm. In this workshop Carrey aims to demystify the business aspects of performing and give participants the information they need to be more effective with the "non-performing" aspects of their career. The workshop is appropriate for anyone connected to the music business, including non-performers. Carrey encourages participants, limited to fifteen, to bring questions and problems for discussion. Cost is $50 ($40 for BACA members).

Topics include creating a business card, developing a mailing list, generating contracts, maintaining a web site, using a sound system, filing taxes, creating a demo or CD, obtaining copyright permissions, sending out press releases, networking and more!" But her intention for this workshop is not to drown performers in subjects and tasks that are uncomfortable.

A former senior VP at Fidelity Investments, Carrey has empathy for performers and artists who wrestle with the business aspects of their career. After a year of being a musician and a performer she came to the conclusion that her perspective was somewhat different than some of her peers who hadn't had the benefit of coming from the business world. With an MBA and 15 years in business, she discovered that there were things that were completely natural to her that were not even in other people's consciousness.

The very first thing Ms. Carrey did was to create nowandthen Productions. She wanted to create an identity the same way that one would create an identity for a product or a business. Shee feels that once you have a great product or service, the key is in being able to market it. And that requires being proactive and not reactive. Inevitably when one begins one's career, a huge amount of energy has to go into being a performer. But as that becomes grounded, one should expand into all of these other aspects.
