BARBARA CARROLL SALUTES ARLEN CENTENNIAL, CELEBRATES NEW CD

Barbara Carroll, the jazz pianist and singer whose cool, sophisticated performances have made her a New York institution, has established a new home at the THE ALGONQUIN OAK ROOM (59 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-840-6800 - http://www.algonquinhotel.com/ ). Accompanied by Jay Leonhart on bass, Ms. Carroll will pay tribute to her personal friend and colleague, the legendary songwriter Harold Arlen. The year 2005 marks the centennial celebration of the composer of the classic film songs from The Wizard of Oz and A Star Is Born, among many others, and standards such as "Over The Rainbow," "Stormy Weather," and "Get Happy." Ms. Carroll will perform two shows every Sunday through December 26th: a brunch show at 2:00 pm and a dinner show at 8:00 pm. Call for cover/minimum information.

Ms. Carroll is a distinctively elegant jazz pianist, composer and vocalist. After making her name with her New York debut at the celebrated Downbeat Club on 52nd Street, she went on to perform in major music rooms across the country. Her audience was regularly comprised of luminaries such as Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett and Dinah Washington, among many others. In addition to Harold Arlen, she performs the work of composers like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn and Thelonious Monk. No matter what the song, Ms. Carroll always connects with her audience through the passion and joy of her performance.

"Barbara at Birdland," Ms. Carroll's new CD to be released December 14th by Harbinger Records, was recorded during her extended run at the fabled jazz club last summer. The disc captures her subtle and sensitive performance in her trademark progressive and lyrical style. Featuring Mr. Leonhart on bass and Joe Cocuzzo on drums, the CD includes standards such as Harold Arlen's "Don't Like Goodbyes," Cole Porter's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To," Bart Howard's "Fly Me To The Moon," and Stephen Sondheim's "Old Friends."

Barbara Carroll is regarded as one of the most fascinating purveyors of swinging jazz piano and expressive vocals. Her inventive piano playing and unique vocal sound insure that she will infuse her work with emotional directness and respect for the tune. Her diverse musical career has encompassed appearances on Broadway in Rodgers & Hammerstein's Me and Juliet, major TV shows, concert halls, jazz festivals and clubs throughout the world. She has made over thirty recordings on labels such as Atlantic, RCA Victor, Verve, Blue Note and DRG.

In 2002, Ms. Carroll completed her record-breaking run at the famed BEMELMAN'S BAR (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600 - http://www.thecarlyle.com/cal.cfm), where she appeared each spring and fall for extended engagements for 24 years. In addition, Ms. Carroll received three Lifetime Achievement Awards last year: the Kennedy Center's "Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz" Award and special honors from the MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs - http://www.macnyc.com/ ) and a Back Stage Bistro Award. In May 2004, the venerable "Highlights in Jazz" concert series paid tribute to Ms. Carroll with an all-star evening featuring Bill Charlap, Grady Tate, Jackie Cain, and Kenny Washington.
