Chip
Deffaa Presents "THE GEORGE M. COHAN REVUE: A Yankee Doodle Dandy's
Life" celebrating the life and times of the original Yankee Doodle
Dand. The revue, which opened appropriately on the 4th of July is
being presented at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (346 West 46th Street, NYC
- 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/
). New, extended dates are Friday & Sunday, July 23rd (9:15 pm) and
25th (8:45 pm), Wednesday, August 4th at 7 pm and Sunday, August 8th
at 2:00 pm. This unprecedented revue packs 40 Cohan songs into 75
fast-moving minutes. There is a $15 cover charge and $10 food/drink
minimum.
The show
was conceived, written, and directed by Chip Deffaa, with music and
lyrics by George M. Cohan (with revisions and a new song or two by
Deffaa) and choreography by Justin Boccitto. Musical accompaniment
(plus additional vocals, and incidental arranging) is by Michael Lavine.
Portraying
Cohan is Jon Peterson, the British musical song-and-dance star who
played the emcee in Cabaret (national tour and on Broadway). Peterson
played Cohan, to rave reviews-, in Deffaa's 16-character, full-length
book musical "George M. Cohan: In His Own Words." Mr. Deffaa has gathered
the six key players from the cast of that show to offer this Cohan
revue for the summer. Featured in the cast, in addition to Mr. Peterson
are Hal Blankenship, Joan Jaffe, Dawne Swearingen, Cathy Remmert and
Dave Warren along with Narrator Michael Townsend Wright.
In his day,
George M. Cohan owned Broadway. A consummate entertainer, songwriter,
dancer, actor, and producer, he dominated American theater in a way
no other man before or since ever has. He was the founder of modern
American musical comedy, which got its start with Cohan's first Broadway
hit, 'Little Johnny Jones,' 100 years ago.
Chip Deffaa
is the author of eight books on music and pop culture. Mr. Deffaa,
has also been an entertainment critic for some 20 years.
