MICHELINE VAN HAUTEM SINGS "SONGS OF JACQUES BREL"

After her sell-out shows at the 2004 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Micheline Van Hautem returns to play the Melbourne International Festival and then comes to Sydney for four special shows at KABARETT VOLTAIRE at The Seymour Theatre Centre (City Road and Cleveland Street, Chippendale, NSW, AU - 9351 7940 - http://www.showtune.com.au/ ) before returning to New York. Belgian singer Micheline Van Hautem will perform the songs of her fellow countryman, the extraordinary Jacques Brel, featuring Frederik Caelen on accordion and piano. Performances wil be Wednesday through Saturday, October 27th througt 30th at 8:15 pm. There is a $35 Show only cover charge. Food and beverages available from 7:00 pm.

Van Hautem's interpretations of Brel's dense, complex lyrics and stunning melodies keep the essence of the originals; elegiac angry, funny, heartrendingly beautiful songs.

In the summer 2003, the singer's performance won her the much-coveted Herald Angel Award at the annual Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Indeed, with the hit CD Songs of Jacques Brel (2001) and sell-out concert tour of Northern Europe, this Belgian chanteuse has played a most significant role in fomenting the Brel-renaissance that, now a quarter century after his death, has recently ignited much of Europe.

When still a teenager, Micheline first took to the stage as a singer with Flemish rock-bands and worked for several years as a radio DJ. But then in 1998, eager to make a personal statement in the world's greatest musical melting pot, she relocated to New York City. It was only then, in her self-imposed exile, that she felt driven to reinvent, one could say reincarnate, the oeuvre of her legendary countryman, the late Jacques Brel.
