THREE SENSATIONAL SUNDAY WITH THREE LEGENDARY LADIES
Darien's Lynn DiMenna will take her signature interview style and extensive
knowledge of the American Classic Songbook to THE DARIEN ARTS CENTER
(2 Renshaw Road, Darien, CT - 203-655-5414 - http://www.arts.darien.org/
) for three sensational Sunday afternoon's with three legendary women
of song: Margaret Whiting, Julie Wilson and Kitty Carlisle Hart. The
DAC Weatherstone Studio will be turned into "A Singer's Studio," ala
Bravo's "The Actor's Studio," when Margaret Whiting makes her first
appearance in Darien on November 19th at 4:00 pm. Then, on February
4th, at 4:00 pm, it's Kitty Carlisle Hart; and on March 25th, at 4:00
pm, the great Julie Wilson pays a visit.
DiMenna, who has interviewed many of today's legends,
hottest stars and brightest newcomers in the live entertainment worlds
of cabaret, Broadway and jazz, will host the series in what will be
a fascinating, once-in-a-lifetime afternoon of conversation, audience
talk back, and maybe even a few surprises. After nearly 13 years as
the host/producer of "Welcome to the Club" and co-host of "At The
Ritz!", she has joined the production team for "Voices Among Us,"
a TV variety show aired on RCN Cable, Channel 8 in New York and affiliated
stations around the country.
As a performer, DiMenna has performed for numerous benefits
and made appearances at many of the area's finest cabarets and supper
clubs including Judy's Supper Club, Danny's Skylight Room, Arci's
Place, The Red Blazer Too, Swing 46 and The Oak Room at the Algonquin
Hotel. She has been the featured vocalist with the Stan Rubin Orchestra
and has made guest appearances with The Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller,
Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown and Count Basie Orchestras.
About The Legends
Margaret Whiting was a dominant pop singer in the '40s
and '50s. The daughter of composer Richard Whiting, her run of hits
began in the early '40s when she was featured on radio shows, singing
with composer/vocalist Johnny Mercer. She was later a prominent vocalist
with the bands of Freddie Slack, Billy Butterfield and Paul Weston.
She had three huge hits in 1948 with "Now Is the Hour," "A Tree in
the Meadow," and "Far Away Places," then teamed with Jimmy Wakely
for another top hit in 1949, "Slippin' Around."
Kitty Carlisle Hart is still performing and garnering
great reviews, too. At the age of 96, Hart has worked with or known
much of the Who's Who of 20th century entertainment. Perhaps best
known to TV audiences for her 15-year stint as a panelist on "To Tell
the Truth," she has been seen on Broadway in many shows including
the 1983 revival on "On Your Toes." Her film credits include "Murder
at the Vanities," "A Night at the Opera" (opposite the Marx Brothers),
"Radio Days" and "Six Degrees of Separation." She recently performed
her cabaret show at Feinstein's at the Regency in New York.
Julie Wilson reigned as hostess over the famed St. Regis
Hotel club room during the 1950s. Tossing that scarlet feather boa
around her shoulders, she can still wear those same signature slinky,
silky sequined gowns; her hair is back in a sleek chignon; that white
gardenia, a tribute to the late Billie Holiday, is still tucked behind
her left ear. But except for that svelte figure, sculptured profile,
and generous smile, Julie Wilson has journeyed a long way from her
famed niche during the glory days of cabaret.
Tickets for the three Sunday events are $25 each and
may be reserved by calling the Darien Arts Center's box office at
203-655-5414 (Cabaret). Major credit cards are accepted. Reservations
are highly suggested. Seating for these Sunday events is reserved,
but general seating is the order of the day (meaning first come, first
served).
Founded in 1975, the not-for-profit Darien Arts Center
is dedicated to supporting and fostering a greater appreciation of,
and participation in, the visual and performing arts for all members
of the community and has been an important part of the cultural life
of Darien for more than 25 years. A volunteer board of directors and
important committees and boards represent the various areas of interest
and oversee the diverse activities of the DAC and its programs.
