TORONTO'S EVANS AND NYS CONKLIN IN MID-JUNE DUAL ENGAGEMENT
In a surprise announcement on Monday, Toronto's newest and hottest jazz
venue, LIVE AT COURTHOUSE (57 Adelaide Street East, Toronto, Ontario,
CANADA - 416-214-9379 - http://www.liveatcourthouse.com/
) added an unprecedented two-night event to its mid-June calendar. For
the first time, two headliners will occupy the stage at the Courthouse
in a novel dual-engagement. George Evans and his Trio will take pride
in presenting for the first time, Award-Winning New York vocalist and
entertainer, Mary Foster Conklin on Wednesday & Thursday, June 13th
& 14th at 8:30 pm. The George Evans Trio includes on this engagement
Mark Eisenman on piano, Steve Wallace on bass, and Archie Alleyne on
drums.
Himself a veteran of the New York cabaret community
since the 1980s, Evans is thrilled to welcome longtime friend, musical
contemporary and kindred spirit, Mary Foster Conklin to Toronto in
a shared bill. This will be Conklin's Toronto debut, and assuredly,
the first of many appearances on our stages in seasons to come. Be
among the first to enjoy this dynamic jazz-cabaret entertainer, direct
from New York, here in Toronto, Live at the Courthouse.
A celebrated performer on the New York jazz and cabaret
scene, Ms. Conklin's talents have earned her a place on the stages
of The Blue Note, Sweet Rhythm, and Iridium in NYC, The Cultural Center
and Park West in Chicago, the Jazz Bakery and The Vic in LA. In addition
to serving as longtime vocalist with Art Lillard's 15-piece Heavenly
Band, Mary Foster Conklin is a three-time Mac Award winner, a three-time
Backstage Bistro Award winner, and recipient of this year's Mac Award
for "Jazz Recording of the Year" for the Matt Dennis tribute, "Blues
for Breakfast." Her voice is smoky with a tart twist of lemon, and
her style both recognizably traditional, yet unmistakably contemporary,
as she puts her personal stamp on a repertoire that spans over eight
decades.
Recognized
as one of the foremost vocal interpreters of jazz and standards on
the Canadian scene since surfacing in Montreal in the early-1990s,
George Evans has been nominated National Jazz Awards Vocalist of the
Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, George tours actively, and has
been praised for his lively, polished performances in major clubs
in cities such as New York, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. He has
recorded a current total of six projects as a leader, and his latest
album, "Bewitched" can be heard on all the major jazz outlets.
George Evans first thrilled Toronto jazz audiences in
1999 when he launched his second album "I'm All Smiles" at the Top
o' the Senator. He went on to appear there with regularity through
the launch of his fifth album "Movie Songs' in 2005. In addition to
frequent club engagements at all the major venues, George Evans has
become familiar to audiences at home through notable appearances on
TVO, Bravo, and CoolTV, and through sessions and concerts for the
CBC. Evans was the founding member of The Three Crooners, and in 2004
he selected, sequenced, and produced the successful "Here Come The
Boys: a Canadian Crooner Collection" for Maximum Jazz and Universal
Music Canada. www.georgeevans.ca
