FEMMES ON THE THAMES KEEPS ROLLING ALONG ON THE RIVER
Women rule the waves in "Femmes on the Thames." Onboard BATTERSEA BARGE
(Riverside Walk, Nine Elms Lane, London - 020 7498 004 - http://www.batterseabarge.com/
), moored at Vauxhall, this new monthly event, "Femmes on the Thames,"
focuses on fabulous, flirtatious female performers. Hosted by comedian
and singer Rosie Wilby, the show celebrates female talent in cabaret,
burlesque, music, poetry, and other forms. Shows are scheduled for Thursdays
April 12th, May 10th and June 21st (Pride Festival Special) at 8:00
pm.
Continuing to make a splash after its maiden voyage
in February and second show in March, the boatload of talent Thursday,
April 12th at Femmes on the Thames includes:
Lorraine Bowen, a highly original and talented. Wearing
glamourous dresses reminiscent of 60s London fashion, she takes us
into her world of colourful kitsch yet keeps us down to earth with
a sense of mundane domesticity. Lorraine performed with the great
Billy Bragg in the early 90s and he encouraged her to start writing
songs in her inimitable style. Lorraine even uses Billy's old Omnichord
now to accompany some of her songs. Catchy choruses force the crowd
to sing along and sometimes dance too! Lorraine's shows are fun and
playful. She has performed all over the world, from Vancouver to Venice,
Bologna to Bradford, and California to Chelmsford.
Glasgow-born international singer-songwriter Lucinda
Sieger achieved commercial success with number one dance track "40
Miles" (Congress). Lucinda's crystalline voice has been in liasions
with artists including members of Leftfield and Bronski Beat. Her
new CD "Silver Life" features creative remixes of tracks from her
previous "Heart in the Sky" which she co-produced with Temple of Sound.
Lucinda's compositions successfully fuse ambient folk, jazz and dance
in varying measures. Her haunting compositions, unique voice and talent
for interweaving a multiplicity of musical influences provide the
backbone for this masterful mix of chill out mix.
Devon-born Suzy Bennett stormed to the title of Funny
Women award winner 2006 after only a handful of gigs. Her radiant
stage presence, delightfully cheeky observations, and natural ability
to banter with the audience always have people in stitches.
From Minneapolis in the USA comes Karen Vieno Paurus,
who has performed locally, nationally and internationally since 1986
and has fronted two popular Minneapolis bands, Holiday Ranch and BUG!
She was previously named "Minnesota Vocalist of the Year". In Minneapolis
she is a frequent performer with Lili's Burlesque Revue where she
has been in over 300 shows. She has twice sung at the Miss Exotic
World in the California desert and hopes to perform poolside this
June. Miss Paurus is looking forward to performing on the Battersea
Barge as well exploring London, including trying some Spotted Dick.
KTB - Katy Bennett - is only 23 and has already released
2 critically acclaimed albums and has been a finalist at the BBC Young
Folk Awards. She has supported KT Tunstall, Eliza Carthy and Karine
Polwart on tour. In 2006, she was also hired by the RSC to sing for
their production of "Romeo and Juliet" in Stratford-Upon-Avon as part
of the Complete Works' Festival Season.
Caroline Trettine is half German and spent the early
years of her life in Nigeria. Moving to Bristol, she joined the Blue
Aeroplanes. Moving to London for a solo career, she secured a contract
with Billy Bragg and Pete Jenner's Utility Label, recording her album
"Be A Devil". She was on successful tours with Bragg and Christy Moore,
and acclaimed appearances on regional and national BBC radio. Caroline
has experimented with different styles and collaborators, and was
one of the first acoustic artists to embrace hip hop and trip hop.
Her second album "Ten Light Years" was followed by "Trail in the Sky"
which received 4 stars from Uncut. Caroline continues to record and
gig as a solo artist and as a member of the Winnebago Orchestra, and
is currently working on her fourth album.
Trixie Malicious grew up on Vancouver Island, Canada,
dreaming of New York, 50s Cadillacs, seamed stockings and red lipstick.
After ballet school and being a showgirl, she realized that burlesque
was her style of performance, as she loves the combination of glamour,
bump and grind and satirical/comedic elements it combines. She has
been a regular performer on the Canadian circuit, performing in places
such as The Infamous Marine Club. Since moving to London she has been
a regular featured performer at The Bethnal Green Working Men's Club
and has performed in venues including the Play Room and for the Whoopee
Club at the Lost Society in Clapham. Trixie has performed in Rome
for the Micca Club and in the First Annual Rome Burlesque Festival.
Rosie Wilby, resident compere, was a finalist at Britain's
Funny Women 2006 and Leicester Mercury Comedian of the year 2007 (where
she was the only woman to make the final). She hosts with warmth and
wit and performs her own music to kick off the show. A revamped version
of her solo show "Olympic Swingball Champion 2012" is one of the highlights
of the Marlborough Theatre season at the Brighton Fringe this May.
The Battersea Barge has hosted cabaret for the past
seven years. Owner Peter Lewis, a pianist himself, supports artists
by supplying them with a stage in a unique venue. The Barge, minutes
away from central London across the river, boasts a great view of
London sunsets and has a lovely deck open in warm months. A full bar
and food ("not haute cuisine, but boat cuisine") is available before
and during shows for reasonable prices.
With cozy wood paneling, tables with candles, a deep
stage with red velvet curtains and tables and seating for 80 (100
upstairs for private parties), the Battersea Barge is a tempting setting
for live entertainment. The array includes comedy, bands, jazz brunches
and special events. Femmes on the Thames is the newest show onboard,
and will keep rolling on the river for future months.
