FEMMES ON THE THAMES IS ROLLING ON THE RIVER
Women rule the waves in Femmes on the Thames. Onboard BATTERSEA BARGE
(Riverside Walk, Nine Elms Lane, London - 020 7498 004 - http://www.batterseabarge.com/
), moored at Vauxhall, this new monthly event, "Femmes on the Thames,"
focuses on fabulous, flirtatious female performers. Hosted by comedian
and singer Rosie Wilby, the show celebrates female talent in cabaret,
burlesque, music, poetry, and other forms. Shows are scheduled for Thursdays,
March 15th, April 12th, May 10th and June 21st (Pride Festival Special)
at 8:00 pm.
Launched with a splash in February, the first Femmes
on the Thames featured multifaceted female talents: cabaret luminary
Holly Penfield, post-punk poet and performance artist Sue Johns, Romanian
jazz singer Monica Madas, neo-burlesque artist Ophelia Bitz, and two
bands, Annalie & The Anamoly Project, and Lily Fraser, complete with
a harp and cello.
The second Femmes on the Thames, on March 15th follows
on the heels of International Womens Week. The talent lineup includes:
Rosie Lugosi, The Vampire Queen, whose performance combines terror
with a dash of tease, glamour with more than a hint of hellfire; Liz
Bentley, who has been performing her own brand of life-affirming comedy
using story, poems and songs accompanied by her ukulele and Casio
keyboard, on the cabaret/comedy/literature circuit in the UK; Dana
Immanuel, whose early childhood trauma left her with a propensity
to play the banjo, and a guitar.
Also appearing are Rachel Jury, who has been performing
her poetry for the past six years at a variety of locations across
Britain and Europe; Sarah Louise Young, a comedian and singer, and
a seasoned performer of the Edinburgh Fringe where her most recent
show was Confessions of a Paralysed Porn Star, and she was a frequent
performer and guest host of The Midnight Carousel; Collette Kelly
who infuses some Irish spirit just in time for St Patrick's Day; Sapphira,
a classically trained pianist, singer/songwriter and belly dancer
with a signature "sing and fling" act.
Host Rosie Wilby, a finalist at Britain's Funny Women
2006 and Leicester Mercury Comedian of the year 2007 (where she was
the only woman to make the final) comperes with warmth and wit and
performs her own music to kick off the show.
The Battersea Barge has hosted cabaret for the past
six years. Owner Peter Lewis, a pianist himself, supports artists
by supplying them with a stage in a unique venue. The Barge, minutes
away from central London across the river, boasts a great view of
London sunsets and has a lovely deck open in warm months. A full bar
and food ("not haute cuisine, but boat cuisine") is available before
and during shows for reasonable prices.
With cozy wood paneling, tables with candles, a deep
stage with red velvet curtains and tables and seating for 80 (100
upstairs for private parties), the Battersea Barge is a tempting setting
for live entertainment. The array includes comedy, bands, jazz brunches
and special events. Femmes on the Thames is the newest show onboard,
and will keep rolling on the river for future months.
