HIGHLIGHTS IN JAZZ CELEBRATES THELONIOUS MONK 90TH BIRTHDAY
Jack Kleinsinger's Highlights in Jazz Presents Thelonious Monk 90th Birthday Celebration on Thursday, April 12th at 8:00 pm at THE TRIBECA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (199 Chambers Street, NYC - 212-220-1460 - http://www.tribecapac.org/ ). Kenny Barron's unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms has received raves from jazz publications. Ben Riley is one of the most richly experienced drummers in jazz today. The Georgia-born drummer came up in Harlem during the second wave of bebop in the fifties, playing with Randy Weston and others. He was at Minton˙s with saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and anchored the saxophonist's two-tenor quintet with Johnny Griffin, but his true claim to fame came during his years with iconoclast pianist Thelonious Monk.

Rome Neal is the Artistic Director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe theatre program. Mr. Neal received an Obie Grant with Cafe founder Miguel Algarin for excellence in theatre. Over the years he has received five Audelco Awards for his direction of Pepe Carril˙s "SHANGO de IMA" and Samuel Harp's "Don't Explain." Mr. Neal also received two AUDELCOS for his acting: one for Lead Actor in Gabrielle N. Lane's "SIGNS," and one for Solo Performance in his critically acclaimed "MONK," by Laurence Holder.

$30 General Admission.
