CABARET NEWS - NEW YORK CITY

NEW VOICES COLLECTIVE PRESENTS PETER SACHON'S CELLO PROJECT III
Peter Sachon once again brings his ambitious solo project to the intimate setting of the LEONARD NIMOY THALIA HALL at SYMPHONY SPACE (Broadway at 95th Street - 212-864-5400 - http://www.symphonyspace.org/ ) on Thursday, May 17th at 7:00 pm. Believing that Broadway is a vital area of new American music, Mr. Sachon's series "The Cello Project" opens a previously untapped source for concert music. Peter Sachon has asked acclaimed Broadway composers, who write almost exclusively for the voice, to write new music for the cello. These new pieces are composed without text, setting, or vocals. For most of these composers, this is their first attempt at this area of composition: concert music.

Presented by the New Voices Collective, this groundbreaking series has created new found excitement and interest from both the Broadway and classical communities. The result is a wide range of pieces from some of New York's finest composers, designed not only to show off every aspect of the cello's diverse range, but also to showcase the talents of the some of the best composers in America.

Drawn in by the artistic challenge, and because of Mr. Sachon's reputation and talent as a cellist, over twenty-five acclaimed composers have already created original pieces for The Cello Projects I and II. Among them have been Ricky Ian Gordon (My Life with Albertine, Orpheus and Euridice, Grapes of Wrath), Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Godspell), Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Once on This Island, Dessa Rose), and Michael John La Chiusa (The Wild Party, Marie Christine, Hello Again).

This world-premiere "cycle" will travel through the worlds of classical, jazz, and Broadway. The program will premiere works written by a starry array of composers, including Deborah Abramson, Michael Arden, Jenny Giering, Zina Goldrich, Jake Heggie, Dan Lipton, Bobby Lopez, Larry O'Keefe, Joshua Rosenblum, Stephen Schwartz, Joseph Thalken, and Maury Yeston.

Since its inception in January 2003, the New Voices Collective (founded by Joel Fram, Doug Okerson, and Jen Bender) has been dedicated to nurturing young composers in the creation of new works, as well as encouraging established composers to find their "new voice" by experimenting with different musical genres. The New Voices Collective (NVC) provides both young and established composers the opportunity to hear their work performed by well-known classical and Broadway artists.

The New Voices Collective is proud to announce that their concerts are made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts.

Tickets are priced at $25.
