PAPER MOON CABARET DEBUTS IN WESTBURY
On May 2nd, vocalists Martin David, Gary Friedman, Sophia Niarchos will
each sing 3-4 selections from a variety of standards and pop music representing
Sinatra, Bocelli, Humperdinck, Sammy Davis, Jr., Van Morrison, the Marcels
and others as part of "Paper Moon Cabaret" at MIRELLE'S BLUES (170 Post
Avenue, Westbury, NY - 516-338-4933). Event includes buffet dinner 7:30
to 8:30 pm, show and Discussion: 8:30 to 9:45 pm, followed by open mic.
Musical director is Fred Gatti.
"Paper Moon Cabaret" is a unique program designed to
give feedback by experienced music professionals involved in several
areas of the music industry to talented vocalists who aspire to develop
cabaret and pop music careers, while entertaining Long Island audiences
who enjoy the standards, musical theater, and other forms of cabaret
music, performed live, in a 70-seat restaurant-style club with excellent
sound and lighting systems. After each performer's set, the panelists
will offer constructive criticism about what they do well and what
they should think about working on.
Panelists are Linda Amiel Burns: Cabaret Reviewer, Director,
2007 MAC Award Nominee; Robert Porembski: Faculty, Music Industry
& Tech. Program, Mercy College; Penelope Grover: Vocal Instructor;
Spyros Poulos: Owner, Logic Music Inc.; and Rose Gunter, Private performance
style coach.
Sophia Niarchos began her public solo singing career
on a youth group bus from Detroit to Philadelphia, when she sang a
cappella, the Peter, Paul & Mary hit of the day, "Leaving on a Jet
Plane." She pursued a traditional career as a teacher, and raised
two children, it wasn't until she discovered karaoke and was inspired
by a series of the enthusiastic support of audiences that heard her
sing as well as an incredible series of "coincidences" that she rediscovered
her love of singing and found the medium that would allow people of
any age to express themselves through music cabaret. She attended
a cabaret workshop with Gerry Geddes and Miles Philips at the home
of a neighboring Long Islander, Linda Ray and continued to study the
art form at Helen Baldassare's Cabaret Performance Workshop, with
accompanist Tracy Stark, and at Lina Koutrakos' and Lennie Watts'
"Summer in the City," accompanied by several well-known musical directors.
Having taken two years of voice lessons with Long Island
Opera Company baritone Leo Lozito, who has an excellent reputation
among classical and musical theater vocalists on Long Island, Sophia
has performed as a soloist in the Don't Tell Mama's Cabaret Performance
Workshop "graduating program," with the Long Island Cabaret Theater,
in a multi-artist program at Dillon's in New York, in a Greek-language
program of Melina Mercouri's music at Mezzo-Mezzo Restaurant in Astoria
and on several occasions at Trudi Mann's Sunday open mikes at LaBella's
in NYC. She has also taken her singing talent to hospitals, rehab
centers and assisted living centers on Long Island and in Queens through
her company Karaoke Kare, introducing karaoke to residents and participants
to give them an opportunity they wouldn't have otherwise had to express
themselves musically with the benefit of orchestral accompaniment
and without needing to memorize lyrics!
Martin David, an excellent singer with a powerful tenor
voice has studied cabaret performance technique under the tutelage
of Beth Goodrich both at Great Neck Adult Education and privately.
A multi-talented instrumentalist (keyboard, sax, clarinet),
who has played with orchestras and bands for several decades, Gary
Friedman has developed his innate wonderful singing skills primarily
through karaoke, participating in many performances with Karaoke Kare
and in others at private clubs.
Fred Gatti is a versatile accompanist in many genres
of music, having worked with Eartha Kitt, Tony Martin, Al Martino
and Henny Youngman; in New York City at Arci's Place for a week-long
stint with Maureen Thompson (the last show, he tells me, was 9 days
after 9/11 and Maureen Thompson donated her salary to NYC's Firemen),
and with Marilyn Michaels at Club Prive in the 1980's. He has also
accompanied students at both public and private schools on Long Island
for their musical theater productions and has been the band leader
of The Fred Gatti Quartet since 1972. He works with recording studios
as a recording session accompanist for many soloists.
Sophia Niarchos is making her debut as a producer as
the conceiver of Paper Moon Cabaret. She has come to realize that
her greatest professional accomplishments are those in which she has
encouraged others to pursue and realize their dreams, supporting them
through her work as a teacher, journalist, editor, and entrepreneur.
Her work with this project has been enthusiastically encouraged and
supported by George Lucas, Executive Producer at Mirelle's Blues,
who has decades of experience in the staging of music projects that
goes back to Woodstock, specializing primarily in sound and light
systems.
Cost for Dinner/Show/Open Mike package is $20. Show
only, $10.
