DAVID CAMPBELL NEW ADELAIDE FESTIVAL ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Adelaide Festival Centre's CEO and Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier and Adelaide Cabaret Festival Chairman, Frank Ford announced today some major changes to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Julia Holt has announced her decision to resign after eight years as Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Frank Ford AM, Chair of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival Committee and initiator of the Festival praised the Festival Centre for the success of the Festival to date.
Frank also announced today that the new Adelaide Cabaret Festival's Artistic Director will be Adelaide born David Campbell. David had originally agreed to direct the 2010 and 2011 Festivals but with the post vacated earlier than anticipated, he has graciously agreed to look after 2009 as well. Campbell is internationally recognized as an outstanding exponent of the art of cabaret. His expertise, skills, and artistic leadership will provide an exciting impetus for the growth of the Festival and for the artists involved. His international reputation will further enhance the recognition and the promotion, nationally and internationally, of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.
David Campbell has continually been described as a world-class performer since he first burst on to the New York cabaret scene over a decade ago. Since then he has continued to go from strength to strength internationally and in Australia. In the past year alone, he has had two platinum selling albums (The Swing Sessions and The Swing Sessions 2), performed a season with Opera Australia and won acclaim from Stephen Sondheim himself for his performance of Bobby in a Sydney production of Company.
After his years on the New York stage, David returned to Australia in 1999 to take the role of Johnny O'Keefe in the record breaking rock n' roll musical Shout! He won top musical honors at the 2006 Helpmann Awards as Best Male Actor in a Musical for his performance in Sunset Boulevard. His hugely popular live Swing Sessions tour with a big band has been a sell-out success right across the nation.
The 2009 Adelaide Cabaret Festival dates have been set for June 5th through 20th. See http://www.adelaidefestivalcentre.com.au/ for more details.
