CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE TIPS
Choosing a Musical Director

Reprinted from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #990304 - Wednesday, March 10, 1999

I waited a few weeks to mention this one, so that I don't cause anyone in particular any grief. I saw a show one night where the performer was fantastic and the song choices were perfection. But the musical director was a drag! He seemed to be playing every song in exactly the same beat, as though a metronome was setting on this piano. The poor performer did his best, but it all sounded the same - ballad or up-tune!

So, when planning a cabaret show that includes music, find the best musical director that you can afford. If you have trouble finding one, go to as many cabaret shows as you can afford - and choose shows with a different musical director each time. Choose performers that do your style of show, and don't hesitate to chat with the performer about his experiences with the musical director, and even take time, if possible to chat with the musical director.

Baby Jane Dexter has been performing for the past few years with Ross Paterson (they are both MAC Award nominees this year) and she actually went with Ross to a Marriage Counselor for a session! True story! No need to go that far, but remember, there is always more than one performer on the stage, but it happens to be your money paying the bills.
